Reflection 3

In Student learning outcome 3 we had to utilize basic concepts used in the

geographic study of human patterns which included diffusion, cultural landscapes,
cultural ecology, and cultural regions to create a geographical research question
and propose a solution to complex real world cultural geography problems.
I chose this artifact as an example of best evidence shown of SLO 3 because
it demonstrates my formulation of a geographical research question regarding the
urbanization problems created by urbanizing Beijing, China. In this assignment I
had to come up with a question of why urbanization was happening to this area and
identify the effects it has on the region. It is a prime example of SPO 3a because I
had formulated a problem regarding urbanization. It also satisfied SPO 3b because I
had to create a solution to the current problem of waste, smog, and over population
facing Beijing currently. I also chose this assignment because it was the most
challenging when faced with creating a solution to a problem. People flock to
Beijing because it is the capitol and a financial hub of China and people see
economic gain in this area which created an urban problem for this region. There
are many problems created when faced with urbanization and over population and I
had to create multiple strategies to tackle all of the problems created by
urbanization. I feel this is a good example of what I am learning of cultural
geography.
I used my research skills in order to learn about all the problems of
urbanization in the region of the world. I had to look at different journals and
articles to grasp the problem as a whole. Researching the various problems helped
me understand the hazards of over population. I also used my analytical skills to
understand the scale of the situation at hand. In analyzing this problem it help me
create a multifaceted solution in cutting back pollution, waste, and overcrowding
traffic. My analytical skills also helped me understand the geographical pattern and
process that created an urbanization problem in Beijing.
One way my knowledge has grown through the project is it has helped me
understand how growth in population can be a great detriment to the environment
and care counter measures have to be implemented to fight all the negative effects
of urbanization. Secondly my analytical skills have grown in formulating a solution
to urbanization. The problem faced is multifaceted and this lead me to do some
analyzing in order to create a well-rounded and complete solution to the problems
faced. Lastly my research skills have improved because of the tedious effort in
finding the most hazardous problems of urbanization, I had to sift through many
minor problems and target the major problems faced in Beijings urbanization
problem.
