Instructional Procedures
Focusing Event: Quick review of what we learned yesterday with the teacher
asking questions.

Teaching/ Learning Procedures:

The teacher will ask what they think a caption or heading is. The teacher will
show the anchor chart from yesterday. The teacher will quickly review what a
heading and caption is with the class.
Show page 7 of the book with the heading and caption covered. Ask what a
caption is again?
The teacher will read the text to them that is right by the picture. The teacher will
then look at the picture and think of a possible caption for that picture that also
matches the text. Then with a neighbor, they will share what caption that they
came up with and why.
Come back together as a class with different groups sharing their captions. Also
asking why they came up with that particular caption.
Then reveal the caption for the picture. Read that caption and ask does this sound
similar to what you came up with.
Ask what a heading is and do you read everything in the text. Reread the text and
stress that the headings are to match both the text and caption for the picture.
With a partner, come up with a heading for the text. Different groups will then
share their headings.
Talk about how their headings matched their captions.

Show the heading for the text then talk about how the heading matches the
caption and text. That it gave a brief overview of what the text is going to be
about.
Talk about what they are going to be doing in stations after they finished their
poems. The Teacher will model what they are supposed to do during stations with
their books by drawing a picture of what a heading and caption is. Also
modeling what type of sentence to write about what a heading or caption does.
Formative Check (ongoing or specific): Asking questions and walking
around listening to their conversations during partner work

Reteach (alternative used as needed): Pull a small group and use a familiar
book to them that has a caption and heading. Talk about how they are match together with
the heading, caption, text, and picture.
Closure:
Ask them questions about what a heading/caption is.
Assessment/Summative Evaluation:
