Tectonic Plates
Group 3

The Earth

The Earths Layer

Core The innermost zone of the planet made if nickel
and iron. Inner core is solid while outer core is liquid.
The interaction of these two gives us our magnetic field.
Mantle Above the core containing magma; convection
currents here that drive plate tectonics.
Crust The outermost layer of planet; contains
basement rock for ocean and continents

The Earths Layer

The Earths Layer

Asthenosphere The outer part of the mantle,
composed of semi molten, flexible rock.
Lithosphere The brittle outermost layer of the
planet that is approximately 100km thick.

Crust
Continental mostly granitic, lighter than oceanic
crust; made of mostly Si and O.
Oceanic mostly basaltic, made of Fe and Mg;
dense. Subducts beneath continental crust.

Theory of Plate Tectonics

Plate tectonicsis the theory that Earth's outer shell is divided into
severalplatesthat glide over the mantle, the rocky inner layer above
the core. Theplatesact like a hard and rigid shell compared to Earth's
mantle. This strong outer layer is called the lithosphere.

The lithosphere is broken into plates
