Date: October 14th, 2015

Subject/ Topic/ Theme: Social

I. Objectives
What is the main focus of this lesson?
The main focus of this lesson is for students to review what they need to do during a fire drill and practice
learning their addresses.
How does this lesson tie in to a unit plan? (If applicable.)
This lesson ties into my unit because students need to know what to do if they have a fire at their home.
They need to understand the right ways to handle the situation as well as their addresses in order to give
this information to a dispatcher.
What are your objectives for this lesson? (As many as needed.) Indicate connections to
applicable national or state standards. If an objective applies to only certain students write the
name(s) of the student(s) to whom it applies.
-3.1 describe fire and burn hazards
-3.3 Students will demonstrate the procedure for using 911 to help in emergencies
-3.5 Students will describe situations that are dangerous
-3.6 Students will demonstrate actions to take in a fire emergency.
Students will practice learning their addresses in case there was an emergency. Students would be able to
use this information to help them get through the situation safely with dispatchers help.

The description of (script for) the lesson, wherein you describe teacher
activities and student activities
-Everyone come to the gray chair
-Read Dot The Fire Dog
-Read Dots Fire Safety Tips

-Ask students to remember a favorite safety tip and once I read them through one
timethey can stand up when they hear their favorite safety tip read out loud and

go sit down at their chairs with a pencil out on their desks (remember tip that is your
favorite)
-I will put the fire safety tips from dot up on the overhead projector
-Show students the envelope I have with my address written on it
-Addresses are important to have memorized in case we are in an emergency and
need to tell 911 where we are located!!!!
-Explain that students are going to have an opportunity to write their own addresses
on an envelope that is going to go home to their mom and dad to read!
-First we are going to work on the sheet to send home in our envelopes!
-This sheet going to be sent home in the envelope so make sure its your best
handwriting!!!
-Hand out the sheets
-Finger on your nose, finger on name, finger on your neighbors paper
-I will re-read the fire safety tips from dot and have students remember which one is
their favorites
-Turn and talk to their neighbor about their favorite safety tip and the tip they want
to share with their parents in their envelope that goes home
-Now that you have your safety tip picked out, and shared it with your neighbor, I
want you to do your best drawing of your safety tip and even add some words in it
to describe what the picture is a picture of. This will help you be able to explain the
safety tip to your parents when you get home
-You may use markers, crayons, and colored pencils on your drawing. Make sure this
is your best drawing/work so your parents can get the full picture of what is your
favorite safety tip for them to remember. You have the opportunity to be a teacher
to your parents!!!!!!!!!
-Once you have finished your best drawing/and or writing, you may raise your hand
and I will come to your desk and have you explain what you drew and I will give you
an envelope
-Once you get your envelope you may write mom and dad and then write your
address below itCHECK your address on your card for help.

Closure

-Once you have written your address and paper you may fold up the paper and put
it in the envelope and deliver your envelope to your own mailbox.
-Then you may go quietly read a book at the back of the classroom

Your reflection on the lesson including ideas for improvement for next time:
-I felt that my objectives were covered and accomplished, but wished I had been more
thorough on address instructions. I think that the idea of having students write their
addresses was clever, but might have been accomplished in a different way. This was good for
students who needed to learn their addresses in a different way, but since students were
tested verballythis didnt accomplish the end results of saying their addresses. It was a
clever way to get the students engaged in their learning and an opportunity for students to
share their learning with their family through a letter, but could have been accomplished
another way as well. If I were to teach this lesson again, I think that I would skip having
students write their addresses and do another form of learning through verbalization.
