Vocabulary Digital Story: Introduction to The Holocaust 11th grade

Vocabulary Digital Story URL: https://youtu.be/PM-cvpjc6VU

This is Anne Frank, her family lived in Germany around 1929-1930. Yet, emigrated to the
Netherlands because Hitler came to power. Her family was convinced that they would be safe in
Amsterdam from the anti-Semitism, which means people that discriminate against or are
prejudice against Jews, in Nazi Germany. This means that Germany is filled with members of the
National Socialist German Workers Party, which controlled Germany from 1933 to 1945 under
Adolf Hitler. However, Anne Frank and her family soon realized that even after moving, they
still were not safe. By the time Anne Frank was ten years old, the German invasion had taken
place. This meant nothing more than trouble for all of the Jews. In May of 1923 it became
mandatory for all Jews to wear a yellow badge on their clothes that way they would be
recognizable. A few days later the first group of Jews were being deported to Belzec death
camps, a place where individuals are collectively to be killed, as soon as possible after arrival.
By now Annes family knew that something needed to be done, however they knew that since
they were Jews there was not much that they could do. Then they decided that they would go into
hiding in order for their lives to be spared. Hiding in a secret annex at Annes father business, the
family thought they would be safe until the war ended. A year went by and they were still safe,
and then in the second year they were discovered by the Gestapo. The day they feared the most
finally happened, and right then they knew that their lives would never be the same. From
August 1944 until 1945 the family members all experience situations that changed who they
were, most of the family members passed away at concentration camps, camps in which people
are detained or confined; usually under harsh conditions and without regard to legal norms of
arrest. The only survivors from Anne Franks family was Otto and Fritiz Frank; they lived on to
tell their familys story and to present Anne Franks diary to the world. This era in time is known
as the Holocaust (the systematic, bureaucratic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of six
million Jews by the Nazi and its collaborators).

Vocabulary Plan
1. Describe your future classroom in terms of content area, grade level, and reading abilities
(above, at, or below grade-level)
My future classroom will be 10th or 11th grade World History class. I would like to teach IB
students, however I am a huge fan of teaching general students. I would like my students to be at
grade level reading, but this would not be an issue if some students were not. I like to assist as
much as I can.
2. Objective (Using "The student will be able to. . . " or TSWBAT)
By the end of the lesson students should be able to understand the significance of the
Holocaust, and they will be able to analyze the outcome of some of the situations that took place.
The students will understand who Hitler was, and why he fought so hard against the Jews.
3. Model (How will you model what you want students to do?) Describe the Morphemic
Analysis you will have your students conduct here.
I will model this lesson by going through all of the information before we get started. I will
hand out articles to the students for their reading exercise and then I will direct them with further
instructions. I will make a list of the vocabulary words and post them around the room, in case
they are needed. Once I have finished with that I will bring the classs attention to the projector
and show my vocabulary digital video. I will let the students know that this is a horrific time in
history, however it is history. Also, I will let the students know what I expect from them when
completing table top twitter.
4. Guided Practice (While students are in groups, pairs, or working with the teacher, what
will they do to learn the objective?)
As I go over the instructions, and I place vocabulary list around the room the students will
have a better understanding of what it is we will be completing. After that is complete I will play

the vocabulary digital story. This is where I believe my students will focus in more on the topic,
and it will allow them to hear one story of the many that occurred. After watching the video a
brief discussion will take place, that way we can get some thoughts out in the open. Then the
students will read the article and discuss with their groups. Finally, the students will complete
table top twitter. Here they will be looking at pictures and writing what they think. Students will
be able to take notes the entire time through the lesson so that they can bring it back for later
discussion. They will be able to fully understand why the Holocaust took place, and what Jews
went through during this time.
5. Independent Practice (What will they do independently, to show you they have learned
the objective?)
The students will independently work on table top twitter by themselves. Here they will be
asked to write questions, answers, thoughts, or ideas about the pictures that are presented in front
of them. Also, the students will be completing a KWL chart.
6. Assessment (How will you know that they can do this objective by themselves? If you make
use of a quiz, please provide the questions.)
I will be grading the students on their table top twitter, and their KWL charts. While we
are having the discussion I will be marking each students off as I ask them a question. Also, they
will be graded from their exit slips.
