Protein Structure
Protein structure is a very complex and involve many layers to produce the final
functioning protein. In order for the proteins to form properly there are several bonds and
interactions that must take place. One of these bonds is the hydrogen bonds (a bond between
hydrogen atoms and another electronegative atom) which form on the secondary structure
between R-groups. (These bonds can either create alpha helix or beta pleated sheet shape.) On
the tertiary structure the protein is further specialized by Disulfide Bridges (a bond between two
sulfide bridges), Ionic Bonds (chemical bond where one atom gains an electron and one atom
loses an electron), and Van der Waal interactions (sum of attractive or repulsive forces). Overall,
the bonds and interactions found in proteins is essential to their shape as well as there function.
