How did the Patriots justify their separation from Great Britain?
The thirteen colonies sought independence from Great Britain in
the late eighteenth century. Armed conflict of the American
Revolution began with the Battle of Lexington and Concord in
Massachusetts. Common Sense written by Thomas Paine and the
Declaration of Independence written primarily by Thomas Jefferson,
both written in 1776, documented the Patriots cause. They
outlined the reasons for seeking economic and political freedom
from Great Britain.
