The HOLY kORAN in the Jewish Encyclopedias

Abstract. Orientalists paid great attention to the Koran, about which they wrote many books for various
purposes; a minority of them were objective, while the majority were prejudicial.
There are different Jewish Encyclopaedias, written in Hebrew and other languages, by Jews and non Jews,
which present the results of the Orientalist studies about the Koran.
Because of the importance given to the Encyclopaedias in academic circles both in the West and the East,
and due to their wide circulation among researchers in different fields of Jewish studies in particular and
religious studies in general, the revision of their contents and the correction of the shocking errors made in
This article deals with the "KORAN" in five Jewish Encyclopaedias (3 in English & 2 in Hebrew):
1- Ha- Encyclopedia ha-Ivrit (Encyclopedia Hebraica). (In Hebrew).
2- 'OTSAR YISRAEL. An encyclopedia of all matters concerning Jews and Judaism. (In Hebrew).
3- Encyclopaedia Judaica.
4- The Universal Jewish Encyclopedia
5- The Jewish Encyclopedia.
The entry of the "Koran" in these Encyclopedias consists of various subjects such as: the Form of Revelation,
and the Life of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Allah and Creation, Last Judgment; Resurrection, Hell
and Paradise, the Prophets who are mentioned in the Koran and their stories, Old and New Testament
Stories, and Hebrew Translations of the Koran.
