Honors 1000
Reflective Essay

Being a student in the Irvin D. Reid Honors College here at Wayne State
University is a complete privilege. The Honors College provides students with the
opportunity to strengthen their critical thinking skills, and view subjects with a
broader perspective. These types of skills will always come into use no matter what
subject one studies, or what career one may choose to pursue. As a student in both
the Honors College and the Mike Ilitch School of Business here at Wayne State
University, I need to be very disciplined and focused in order to come out of both
discourse communities successfully. This requires a sacrifice of personal enjoyment,
and a strong devotion to my studies. Luckily, I am very committed to studying
thoroughly, showing passion and hard work within my work, and of course trying my
best not to receive morbid grades. These disciplines have shaped me to be the
tough student I am today and have taught me that success does not come lightly,
nor is it easy.
My journey in becoming a student at Wayne State Irvin D. Reid Honors
College was fairly simple as I was given the Detroit Urban Scholarship to be a part of
it without having to contribute a single penny for my college tuition. Also, the need
for a diverse group in the Honors College was high, along with the need for diverse

minds that carried deep thinking, and I was chosen to be a student among that
group. My first course in the Honors College was Honors 1000, and I really did not
understand the concept of the class at first. The class seemed extremely confusing
to me, only discussing situations where Detroit is scrutinized, and looked down
upon. It seemed Honors 1000 was designed to promote the city of Detroit as a
positive city full of potential. As the semester passed, I realized this class is much
more than a promotion tactic. All the concepts I have learned such as the Burger
King effect, urban form, seeing being active and reciprocal, are all ideologies that
can be used for almost any subject. These concepts were applied to different
situations throughout all the writing I had to do in Honors 1000, from writing an
essay about how Detroit defined people (essay 1) , where Detroit was taking people
(essay 2), and what people should do about particular situations in Detroit (essay
3). Also, these concepts are not only made for observing Detroit, but all cities.
Honors 1000 has taught me to not just look at the obvious thats on the outside, but
to actually do research and look at whats on the inside.
Honors 1000 is only one of many courses offered by the Honors College that
allows student to look at simple matters with a stronger views and opinions. It is
only the starting point that prepares students to tackle on upcoming honors courses
that will cover concepts that are even more challenging. As an accounting major
and future public accountant, one may wonder how Honors 1000 and future classes
in the Honors College will benefit me. Well for one thing, it has strengthened my
writing skills, shaped me into a strong analytical thinker which is very much useful
in accounting, and also enabled me to broaden my thinking in a variety of ways. The
Honors College gives me a huge edge as I compete against my colleagues in having
a successful future.
