8-Analyze the guiding principles and the five developmental domains related to the

Wisconsin Early Learning Standards

The Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards (WMELS) provides the framework for
families, professionals and policy makers who work with children from birth through
first grade. I learned by reading; Wisconsin Models Early Learning Standards how
these principles are the foundations which a common language and responsibility
for the well-being of children from birth to first grade. WMELS is a set of guiding
principles that specify beliefs and values about young children. The primary
principles are;
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)
6)
7)
8)
9)

All children are capable and competent

Early relationships matter
A childs early learning and developmental is multidimensional
Expectations for children must be guided by knowledge of child growth and
development
Children are individuals who develop at various rates
Children are members of cultural groups that share developmental patters
Children exhibit a range of skills and competencies within any domain of
development
Children learn through play and the active exploration of their environment
Parents are childrens primary and most important caregivers and educators

The principles of WMELS is categorized in five domains;

1)
2)
3)
4)
5)

Health and physical development

Social and emotional development
Language development and communication
Approaches to learning
Cognitive and general knowledge

Each development domain is then subcategorized by labels A, B, and C. I learned

how benchmarks, curriculum and assessments are critical to understanding the
development and behavior of a child. I learned from 9 guiding principles the right
skills children need to prosper in life. Child development starts at birth. Parents and
caregivers are the most important people in the development and learning of a
child. When we observe and document a child, we understand what planning and
implementation is needed as steps of the teaching cycle. The WMES sets the stage
for a young childs curriculum. The use of assessment practice supports and
promotes learning and development curriculum that reflects the practices,
interactions and instructions that supports a childs early learning development.
When doing observations of a child, we need to make sure they are objective
observations. Objective observations is when you describe exactly what is
happening without making assumptions about why they are occurring. To be an
objective observer you need to be unbiased and avoid stereotypes. This is needed
so we know exactly what the child needs to grow and learn. When we implement
ongoing assessments in our curriculum, we see a childs development. When a child
exhibits mistaken behavior, with assessments and observations we see exactly what

a child will need to get over the behavior and grow. By using activity plans based on
the WMELS, they will support learning and development. I learned from the
Wisconsin Model Early learning Standards how to practice documenting a childs
behavior and progress with objective observations techniques. Through ongoing
assessments, planning and curriculum goals and implementation, we support
individual and goal group goals guided by supportive interactions and relationships.
