Assessment Summary
Current Knowledge and Skills
Using the ISLLC Self-Assessment, there are a few aspects that I have yet
to have an experience with, while many of the standards I have had at least
some degree of experience. For example, Standard 1C, which is to create
and implement plans to achieve goals, is something I do personally as an
educator, but it is also something that I have been involved with as an
instructional leader at my school. Other standards, such as 2G, 3C, 3E, 5A,
and 5B are other examples that I feel as an educator I exemplify. Standard
6B I have both knowledge and experience with since I am currently on the
negotiations team in my district.
Even though I have had experience with many of the planning, student
interactions and the instructional leadership aspects of administration, I am
less familiar or not at all familiar with community interactions, using
operating systems, or anticipating emerging trends. Standards 3A, 3B, and
3D are operational standards that I am not at all familiar with. Standard 4D is
to Build and sustain productive relationships with community partners is
also a standard for which I do not have experience.
After finishing the TELSA self-assessment, I was easily able to identify
strengths and weakness in my current administration knowledge level. The 3
lowest priorities that I have are Section 1 (lead analysis, design, and
Disposition on Leadership
The disposition self assessment showed me that my beliefs are in the
right direction for almost all of the indicators, giving myself a rating of strong
evidence for all but 4 of the indicators. One disposition where I fell short on
was Professional development as an integral part of school improvement.
This might be a negative viewpoint I have as an educator when it comes to
professional development, but I have not been in professional developments I
feel that I have made me a better teacher. I think the issues that our school
has with professional developments is that they spend two day-long
professional developments on a new way to do teaching at our school and
then the administrators leave us to get it done. I feel like it needs to be more
support and group training where the administration guides us to what is
needed at our school, instead of only having us hear the information from the
presenter.
I also took the Keirsey Temperament assessment that assigned my
temperament as a SJ Guardian. This temperament seems to be a great
temperament to have in an educational leadership position since they are
typically, practical and down-to-earth, believe in following the rules and
cooperating with others. Attributes would be excelling at directing others to
fulfill their duties and creating a predictable work environment.
Leadership Attributes
After taking the leadership attributes assessment, almost all of my
categories are HD or MD. The categories I gave myself the highest
ratings for were: physical vitality and stamina, intelligence and judgment in
action, need to achieve, capacity to manage, and decide and set priorities. I
find that these are my qualities that will definitely help me to be a great
leader. However, just because I have the ability to manage well, it does not
complete the picture as a good leader. Managers are not necessarily leaders
because managers just need to follow protocol. In order to be a great leader,
I will also need to work on my bottom three attributes: understanding the
followers and their needs, skills in dealing with people, and the capacity to
motivate.
Reading my book for the book review assignment, it has become clear
to me that even if you have leadership deficiencies it does not mean that you
cannot make adjustments and learn the skills necessary to overcome your
deficiencies. Dealing with others and motivating them with be skills I will
need to refine further. My biggest foible would be when I react emotionally to
something that I am very passionate about; it becomes very difficult for me
to act rationally, say the appropriate things and to talk at a normal speaking
volume.
several years that could easily change my stress level dramatically, as well as
several things that none of us would be able to anticipate.
In terms of coping with stress, the strategy that I do regularly and
helps me a great deal is exercise, specifically running. I started running
again last year and my stress has gone down a great deal. I also have been
better at avoiding too many stressors at once and prioritizing the task I need
to complete. Establishing goals and priorities has also been a positive aspect
in my life that reduces my stress levels. I think I am on track of being able to
cope with the stress associated with leadership demands.
