Professional Development and

Professional Plan
Assessment Summary
Current Knowledge and Skills
Using the ISLLC Self-Assessment, there are a few aspects that I have yet
to have an experience with, while many of the standards I have had at least
some degree of experience. For example, Standard 1C, which is to create
and implement plans to achieve goals, is something I do personally as an
educator, but it is also something that I have been involved with as an
instructional leader at my school. Other standards, such as 2G, 3C, 3E, 5A,
and 5B are other examples that I feel as an educator I exemplify. Standard
6B I have both knowledge and experience with since I am currently on the
negotiations team in my district.
Even though I have had experience with many of the planning, student
interactions and the instructional leadership aspects of administration, I am
less familiar or not at all familiar with community interactions, using
operating systems, or anticipating emerging trends. Standards 3A, 3B, and
3D are operational standards that I am not at all familiar with. Standard 4D is
to Build and sustain productive relationships with community partners is
also a standard for which I do not have experience.
After finishing the TELSA self-assessment, I was easily able to identify
strengths and weakness in my current administration knowledge level. The 3
lowest priorities that I have are Section 1 (lead analysis, design, and

development of instruction), 5 (perform learner-related administrative duties)

and 8 (communicate/use communication technology) for which I scored
myself with a 7.17, 7.1 and 5.9 respectively. These three sections are areas
of low priority since they are aspects that I perform regularly as an educator
and an instructional leader. I felt that the communication section (8) would
have been an even lower priority if some of the outdated technology were
removed from the list, since I have never used items such as a slide projector
or a VCR as an educator in the last 4 years.
There are, however, 3 categories of improvement from the TELSA selfassessment, which are Section 3 (lead evaluation of instruction), Section 4
(lead staff development) and section 6 (perform staff related administrative
duties), for which I received scores 8.79, 9.27 and 11.6 respectively. For
leading evaluation of instruction section, I have not had any experience with
some of the tasks, such critiquing an essay test, performance standards,
lesson plan transparencies, slide show projector for a lesson, distance
learning package, an on-the-job training package, or finally taking corrective
action when instructional goals are not met. Some of these (transparencies
and slide show projectors) are outdated technology, but otherwise I have not
been involved with critiquing other curriculum besides my own. In our district
we are allowed to modify our own curriculum calendars, but I am not well
versed in other content area calendars. I have also not done very much at all
for leading staff development; I have only done minimal performance
appraisal before for the individuals in the science department. This is going
to be a focus for my professional plan since I have serious deficiencies in the
area. Additionally I have not experienced staff-related administrative duties

such as interviewing job applicants, conducting staff meetings or anywhere

near disciplining a staff member. This section will also be a focus for my
professional plan.

Disposition on Leadership
The disposition self assessment showed me that my beliefs are in the
right direction for almost all of the indicators, giving myself a rating of strong
evidence for all but 4 of the indicators. One disposition where I fell short on
was Professional development as an integral part of school improvement.
This might be a negative viewpoint I have as an educator when it comes to
professional development, but I have not been in professional developments I
feel that I have made me a better teacher. I think the issues that our school
has with professional developments is that they spend two day-long
professional developments on a new way to do teaching at our school and
then the administrators leave us to get it done. I feel like it needs to be more
support and group training where the administration guides us to what is
needed at our school, instead of only having us hear the information from the
presenter.
I also took the Keirsey Temperament assessment that assigned my
temperament as a SJ Guardian. This temperament seems to be a great
temperament to have in an educational leadership position since they are
typically, practical and down-to-earth, believe in following the rules and
cooperating with others. Attributes would be excelling at directing others to
fulfill their duties and creating a predictable work environment.

Key Ethical Beliefs

I took the ethical orientation assessment, and have been categorized as

socially aware. This categorization indicates that I believe the needs of
society transcends the needs of individuals and that my primary concern is
the welfare of others even if it conflicts with economic self-interest. I agree
with this assessment, because it has not only been a great quality I possess,
it has frequently been a downfall for me in my life. However, as an individual
going into educational leadership I think that it is a great ethical category to
be in since as an educational leader my job will be to educate all students no
matter if it is economical.

Values about Self and Others

After taking the Tasks verses People assessment, I was a little surprised
how focused I was on the task element. My task score was 15, while for
people it was 7. I know that I am frequently task oriented, but I also feel like I
care about people as well. This is something that I will need to learn to find a
balance. Being task oriented is important, but as a leader one needs to bring
those they follow together so that they want to get the task completed.
In the conflict style questionnaire, the highest category I had was
integrating. This is exactly where I would like to be for conflict style
because it has a high concern for relationships and a concern for goals. It
also stresses collaboration and problem solving. I worry sometimes that I
have a tendency to be avoiding or forcing, which were my two lowest
categories. It is possible that I scored them lower because I do not want to
be that person, but they could be issues for me. It is something that I will
have to watch myself on, so that I do not alienate others by forcing or fail to
get anything accomplished by avoiding.

Leadership Attributes
After taking the leadership attributes assessment, almost all of my
categories are HD or MD. The categories I gave myself the highest
ratings for were: physical vitality and stamina, intelligence and judgment in
action, need to achieve, capacity to manage, and decide and set priorities. I
find that these are my qualities that will definitely help me to be a great
leader. However, just because I have the ability to manage well, it does not
complete the picture as a good leader. Managers are not necessarily leaders
because managers just need to follow protocol. In order to be a great leader,
I will also need to work on my bottom three attributes: understanding the
followers and their needs, skills in dealing with people, and the capacity to
motivate.
Reading my book for the book review assignment, it has become clear
to me that even if you have leadership deficiencies it does not mean that you
cannot make adjustments and learn the skills necessary to overcome your
deficiencies. Dealing with others and motivating them with be skills I will
need to refine further. My biggest foible would be when I react emotionally to
something that I am very passionate about; it becomes very difficult for me
to act rationally, say the appropriate things and to talk at a normal speaking
volume.

Methods of Coping with Leadership Demands

My score for the stress assessment is 131, which is below a mild
chance of incurring some kind of health change in the next year. Looking at
the list, there are several things that I could very well be doing in the next

several years that could easily change my stress level dramatically, as well as
several things that none of us would be able to anticipate.
In terms of coping with stress, the strategy that I do regularly and
helps me a great deal is exercise, specifically running. I started running
again last year and my stress has gone down a great deal. I also have been
better at avoiding too many stressors at once and prioritizing the task I need
to complete. Establishing goals and priorities has also been a positive aspect
in my life that reduces my stress levels. I think I am on track of being able to
cope with the stress associated with leadership demands.

Professional Development Plan

Objectives:

Develop the instructional and leadership capacity of staff

Develop a professional develop to assist teachers in conducting the

AzMerit
Develop skills on dealing with people

Develop the instruction and leadership capacity of staff

Actions that will be taken to reach this objective will be:

Conduct a staff meeting

Help staff members write and monitor their individuals
development plans

Since these are areas of improvement, I will work with my mentors to

conduct a staff meeting. I will have individuals during the staff meeting
monitor my performance in terms of speaking skills and leadership. If my
skills were below average, I will work with my mentors on how to improve
these skills and then conduct additional staff meetings until I have reached at

least average on speaking and leadership skills. As an instructional leader, I

will work with the newer teachers in my department to write a development
plan, and monitor their progress. At the end of the year there will be an
evaluation of their progress.
Criteria to know if this objective was met will be the evaluation on
speaking and leadership skills, and the development plans (and final
evaluation) of my departmental teachers. Working with teachers on
development plans will be during the 2016-2017 school year. Conducting
staff meetings will be January 2017-May 2017 during my internship.

Develop a professional development to assist teachers in conducting

the AzMerit
Actions that will be taken to reach this objective will be:

Lead a staff training

Professional development was my low disposition, so I will lead staff

training in the AzMerit in March 2016. The individuals that attend the training
will give me feedback on the usefulness and clarity of the training. I will then
improve the professional development training for March 2017. The artifact
that will be provided for this objective will be the feedback from those that
attended the trainings.

Develop skills on dealing with people

Actions that will be taken to reach this objective will be:

Read People Skills by Dr. Robert Bolton

Read Getting to Yes by Roger Fisher and William Ury

This will be complete by August 2016, and the criteria used will be a
submitted book report outlining the necessary skills for dealing with people
and on negotiations.
