Classroom Management Plan


Philosophy: I believe in bringing out the best in every student and in helping them to reach their
fullest potential in my classroom. In addition, each student should be treated fairly and with
respect. I know that in order for them to treat me with respect, I must respect them. As a result, a
safe and caring learning environment will be created. I outline my rules and expectations from
the very first day and if I have any problematic behaviours it should come as no surprise for the
students as to why they were disciplined. I do not want to punish students but rather learn and
reflect on their behaviour. By being approachable and respectful in class, students are
encouraged to have a voice and not be afraid to ask questions. I show interest in their
likes/dislikes inside and outside the classroom. I want the students to know that I pay attention to
them and value their input in class. I enjoy checking-in with the students one-on-one when given
group/partner/individual time and having a conversation with them about their assignment. I
believe in giving constant formative feedback and reminding my students that the work that they
do is appreciated. I want to focus on the good behavior and attitudes in my classroom. Classroom
management is key to keeping a safe and fun learning environment.
Classroom Expectations: (these are to be posted as a reminder in the classroom)

Be Prepared:
o Be prepared, focused and ready to learn something new in every class. Be aware
of assignment deadlines.
Be Responsible:
o Ensure all assignments are submitted according to deadline. Class attendance is
also important to help students benefit from the course.
Be Proactive:
o Engagement and participation in class is highly encouraged. Dont be afraid to
share your thoughts!
Be Respectful:
o Be respectful towards teacher and classmates. Encourage one another and stay
united as a team! Respect others opinions, questions, and ideas. You would
expect the same for yourself!

1. When calling for attention, raise my hand and wait for the students to have eyes and ears
on me.
2. When group/partner work (sometimes independent) it is understandable that silently
raising a hand will be ineffective. When calling for attention, I will begin to loudly count
down from 5. By the time I get to 0 I expect all eyes and ears on me. If the noise
continues, I have to start counting up to 5. Each number results in time during lunch/after
school. For example, Ive counted to 3 which means that the class owes me 3 minutes.

Before a student request of a redo can be accepted, they need to complete the following:
Are all homework assignments done?
Has the student shown interest in coming to tutorial for extra help on the material?
The student needs to complete 3 tutorials before doing a redo. The student can then
choose which Friday they would like to take the redo.
The grade that is taken is the higher of the two.

School Policies:
This timetable has a RTI (Response to Intervention) period from 2:39 to 3:05 for those
junior/senior high students that teachers have identified as needing more time to complete their
understanding/or offer enrichment. Elementary classes will utilize this same RTI concept at
different time for similar type activities designed to enhance students learning and understanding.
Identified jr/sr high students will be required to join the teacher(s) during this period for more
one on one time on confusing concepts. All required students are expected to participate in this
program. Students choosing to ignore a teachers directed request will face an after-school
detention and/or an in-school suspension to make up the time needed to improve their
understanding of course concepts. Any student behind on assignments/homework come
Friday morning will be required to attend Friday afternoon school from noon 1:00 pm.
This is intended to keep students on time with assignments and to try and prevent the feeling of
exasperation and intimidation resulting from missing/late/incomplete assignments that keep
piling up one after another. Its our intent that with our Monday to Thursday morning RTI
coupled with our regular junior high study hall on Mon-Thursday afternoons that we will not
have many students being required to attend our Friday afternoon school. Regular Friday
dismissal for junior/senior students with no lingering/missing/incomplete/poorly done
assignments will continue to be at noon. Students who are late two or more times in a week are
required to attend Friday school to make up for lost learning time.
ATTENDANCE AND LATE POLICY & PROCEDURES
i.

Students are expected to attend all their classes punctually. Regular class attendance is
essential to satisfactory progress. Research shows that students who attend class daily
outperform those who do not attend regularly. Regular attendance requires the cooperation of the home and school. For known medical/dental/funerals, the
parents/guardians will inform the school prior to the students absence of the reason for
the absence and the expected length of the absence. These absences will be recorded on
our records as excused absences.

Activities such as shopping, haircuts, babysitting, hunting, etc will be recorded as


unexcused and will require a parental note or phone call before that student is allowed
back into class. Parents/Guardians will be informed of all unwarranted and unexcused
absences.

Student attendance will be monitored by the inter-net program PowerSchool. Parents can
also monitor their childs marks and attendance via their home computer. All usernames
and passwords can be obtained from the school secretary.

iv.

Some parents take their children on holidays that exceed those granted by the Board of
Education and Alberta Education. In these cases, no official sanction can be granted, and
a student and their parents/guardians must accept full responsibility for the detrimental
effects of missing regular classroom instruction. While it may be helpful for a student to
receive the reading and work assignments from their teachers prior to their absence, such
information does not imply school consent or permission for such absence.

The following procedure will be followed for students with mounting absences in their
diploma and academic courses:

STUDENT LATES

Each time a student is late for class, regardless of what period in the day, a green
admission slip must be presented by the student to re-gain admission into class. Each
time a green slip is handed out in the office, a record of it is kept in the office. For those
students late twice in a week, the result will be an invitation to Friday afternoon school.

Communication with Parents:


1. Sept 1st-Parent/Teacher night:
a. Best ways to get in touch
b. Ways that I will communicate with them (email/phone call/Remind)
c. Expectations for the students
d. Homework policy

Environment:
1. Daily assignments and deadlines will be posted on the board and kept in its designated
area to provide a visual reminder for the students.
2. In addition, the class agenda should be posted.
3. Seating Arrangements: This will coincide with the specific task in mind. Mostly used for
cooperative learning, discussion, small-group activity, etc. As I get to know my students
better, I will be able to determine the learning styles and categorize them accordingly.
a. H (high), MH (medium high), LM (low medium), L(low)
4. A seating plan will be created and rotated roughly every 4 weeks. Names will be selected
at random and some minor changes can be made depending on how some students
interact with one another. The desks in the classroom are long tables that cannot be
moved or adjusted. As a result, the students will be sitting in groups of five. They have to
opportunity to talk with partners and work in groups.

Discipline Plan:
1. Do not stop the lesson
2. Respond: Because YOU chose to break the rule(s) if a student asks: Why are you
picking on me/What did I do? Choosing means that student had a choice to follow or
break the rules and they should be held accountable.
3. Whiteboard action: Name on the board=warning; 1 check=time spent after schoolconversation with me after school; 2 checks=a phone call home to the parents.
4. Certain situations call for immediate response and in the case, the student will be sent
down to the principals office.
5. The Approach: When the students are working and someone is disruptive: 1) a quick
verbal warning; 2) approaching the student and getting down at their level and discussing
the situation and their options= choice A-stay in class and be on task OR choice B-If I
have to approach you again you will be dismissed; 3) if the disruption continues ask the
student to leave and go to the principals office.

Documentation:
1. Google Classroom will be set up an electronic resource for the students. It is accessible
for students and parents at all times in order to ensure learning anytime and anywhere.
This will be especially handy for students who be absent for extracurricular activities.
Assignments, questions, reading logs, etc. will be created and uploaded by students.
a. Plan B: A student will hand out Absent folders which will allow the teacher to
take a silent attendance. Harry K. Wong and Rosemary T. Wong (2009) explain
that taking attendance at the beginning of class with allow for disruptions to
continue. By having a student silently hand out Absent folders on the desk, the
teacher can mentally see who is not present. The assignment can now be started at
the beginning of class and any work that has been handed out will be placed in the
folder and the student will be able to access it upon return.
2. A record book will be kept for attendance and grades. PowerSchool is the electronic
version of this for the school district and the assessments will be uploaded electronically
as well.
3. A general log will be kept to reflect on lessons, make comments, ask questions, student
interactions and disruptions etc.
