NGSS Lesson Plan Template

Grade: 6th

Topic: Interaction among

living things

Lesson 5 Predation

Brief Lesson Description:

The students will define the scientific meaning of predation, prey and predator and provide
examples of it.

Performance Expectation(s):

Define the meaning of predator and prey.

List some examples from their mind or what they have seen during the lesson.

Specific Learning Outcomes:

Students discuss in pairs or groups to define the scientific meaning of some words.
Students use observable properties to classify animals to either prey or predator.

Narrative / Background Information

Prior Student Knowledge:

Define who animals compete and interact in a certain habitat.

Science & Engineering

Disciplinary Core Ideas:

Crosscutting Concepts:

Engaging in argument from

evidence.

In any habitat there is a prey

and predator and animals
interact by predation and
competition.

Structure and function

Practices:

Obtaining, evaluating, and

communicating information.

Possible Preconceptions/Misconceptions:

Students may miss understand that plants can be included as prey as well.

LESSON PLAN 5-E Model

ENGAGE: Opening Activity Access Prior Learning / Stimulate Interest / Generate
Questions:

The teacher will ask students to discuss in pairs about what they have learnt yesterday about
how do animals interact.
Students will say their answers for other students briefly.
The teacher will introduce the new lesson by telling the students that the learning objectives and
the key words are hidden in different places in the class room. Students will move around and
collect it to paste it on the board.

EXPLORE: Lesson Description Materials Needed / Probing or Clarifying Questions:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffcyVpqn9ng this video will be used to first introduce and
demonstrate the new concept. Students will use their visual skills to observe and tell what is
happening in the video. The video will be paused at different points for further discussing with
students.
Based on the video students will use the colored cards and markers to write more examples of
what animals eat what other animals. The work will be done in groups of 3.

EXPLAIN: Concepts Explained and Vocabulary Defined:

The teacher will define all the new words Predation, prey, and predator
Students will be asked to retell the definitions.
After the students understand the difference between prey and predator, they will classify the
examples that they have to a prey and a predator.

ELABORATE: Applications and Extensions:

The teacher will do Who is the prey and who is the predator activity. Some name of animals will
be printed out and students have to choose one animal and relate it to the shown Power Point.
For example, if one student pick up the name of animal which is snake, she should look at the
pictures and say which animal it will eat.

EVALUATE:
Each student will be given a worksheet to answer it in groups of 3.

Elaborate Further / Reflect: Enrichment:

Students will be asked to do more researches on predation.

Reflection
My lesson in teaching predation for students was interesting for me and for
the students I guess. Because, students were investigating about how
animals interact between each other in order to survive and they learnt
more about what is predation and which animal is the predator or the
prey. I achieved my learning objectives because the students were
participating and answering the questions. Learning about predation is
useful for them because they may build up their knowledge about animals
world on observing how do animals interact in different habitats. I did a
variety types of activities such as; playing the searching game for the new
lesson topic and the who is the prey and who is the predator activity.
However, while we were watching the video which included some animals
feed on other animals, some students were showing least interest. Because,
they are girls and they dont want to watch these scenes this is what I
understood from their behaviors. The time which I used for teaching my
lesson went on the right length of the period time.
