"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in

him shall not perish but have eternal life." (Bible, John 3.16). With the death of one man the
world and the way people live has been completely changed. There are nearly 2.2 billion people
who are defined as Christians which is about 31 percent of the worlds population. Since it is
such a widely known and accepted religion today, it is not difficult to become a part of a church
but before Constantines reign it was not as simple. In order to become a Christian during that
time, there was a long process to be followed which included fully devoting oneself to the faith
with a complete change in beliefs and lifestyle. Christianity is the largest religion in the world
and it has changed the world and the way people live their everyday lives.
Within the religion of Christianity, there are many sects or branches which have been
created throughout the years. The main sects are Roman Catholic, which is the largest, and
Eastern Orthodox Churches, but there are many more within those, due to disagreement in the
church. For example within the sect of Eastern Orthodox, there is the denomination of
Protestantism which is the second largest with over 395 million followers. The Catholic Church
is unique because it is the only one which is led by the Pope. Beginning around the seventh
century, the bishop of Rome (called the Pope) gradually came to exercise more and more
powerful leadership or rule over other Christian churches, especially in Western Europe
(Bowman 6). Although each sect has beliefs slightly different from one another, they all believe
in one God and the Holy Trinity which consists of God the father, God the son, and God the Holy
Spirit. All denominations also have the Bible as their holy book and it is main foundation of their
belief system. The holy book is divided into two parts, the Old Testament and the New
Testament. The Old Testament is the Hebrew Holy Scriptures and the New Testament consists of
books written by Christians who were inspired by God.

Christianity has made a tremendous impact on society since such a large portion of the
world follow the Christian faith. A huge issue happening right now is same sex marriage because
there is much debate between whether the Christian church accepts or does not accept gays. Most
Christians believe that the church is against same sex marriage because the bible states that a
marriage is between a man and a woman, That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is
united to his wife, and they become one flesh (Bible, Genesis 2.24). Although the Bible does
not directly address this directly but it is clear that it considers homosexuality as a sin. No
church will be required to perform a same sex ceremony if that is believed to be contrary to their
Christian or other religious perspective, (Kmiec, 10).
We must keep God in the forefront. Let us be Christian in all our actions -Martin
Luther King, Jr. So spoke the newly elected president of the Montgomery Improvement
Association, which had just been organized to lead a bus boycott to protest segregated seating in
the city buses (Modolvan 2). Not only has Christianity impacted the world not only during the
Civil Rights Movement with Martin Luther King being a preacher, but it has also ended the slave
trade and slavery itself. MLK inspired others to follow the Christian beliefs and not judge others
because of their differences.
The world we have today is the way it is in many ways thanks to the Christian faith with
many positive effects. It has given people the courage to do great things for the world and have
been inspired by God. Although there are many denominations within this religion, all of them
can relate in one way and have Jesus Christ as their savior who died for their sins and gave them
life. They also hope to live the best life possible on earth in order to spend eternity in heaven
with God.
