Life Learning Choices: Studentswilluseresourceseffectivelytomanageandexplorelife
rolesandcareeropportunitiesandchallenges.
L-7.1: develop improved organizational and study strategies/skills by analyzing the
different ways individuals learn; e.g., determine learning styles, personal learning
style
L-7.4: revise short-term and long-term goals and priorities based on knowledge of
interests, aptitudes and skills; e.g., personal, social, leisure, family, community

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Analyze the different ways individuals learn
2. Determine personal learning style
3. Identify study habits based on their learning styles

ASSESSMENTS
Observations:
Key Questions:
Products/Performa
nces:

Observe the students contribution to class discussions. Observe

their independent work on their survey, as well as worksheet.
What makes learners unique? (LO 1) What is my personal learning
style? (LO 2) What habits can I apply for my learner type? (LO 3)

What topic did we explore last week? Being unique
What does it mean to be unique?
I expect students to respond to the questionnaire truthfully
and engage in the tasks and class discussions.
1. Learner Styles Survey
2. Learner Style Activities
3. Study Habits for Style
Is our class unique?

#2

Is there a right way to learn?

You can identify your personal learning style preference by
identifying how you choose to learn most of the time
We are going to learn about each style and get to know
our own learning preferences today
Slide 2: Distribute Learner Style Survey
Independently work on it, it is about you and only your
style of learning
Go through question 1 together, circle the correct
response
If you do 2 of the answers, circle 2
Circle the response that best describes your learning
When I study for a test, I: a) read notes b) have
someone ask me questions c) write study cards
If you do 2 of the answers equally, circle 2 (I may like to read
notes and have someone question me) But it 90 % of the
time I read notes, I will circle a
Independently answer the questions
When students are finishing, change to slide 3:
On a piece of paper, record information about your
ideal study place
Is it bright? Is it loud? Are there other people?
Record as many points as you can about the best place
for you to study!
Have students place their learner style to the side. We will
tally it up later as we piece together their learning style.
Observation: Observe the students ability to identify the
uniqueness of learning styles in a classroom. Observe their
ability to identify their learning preferences on the survey (LO
2).
Get A Feel For the Styles (LO 1)
Slide 4: Visual Learner
Visual learners are the most popular type of learner!
Written notes, diagrams, and pictures
Charts, maps, and flashcards
Who thinks they may be a visual learner? It has to be
written down or drawn for you to learn best
Slide 5: Lets create a class mind map on Bubble.us
Who has used mind maps of webs to brainstorm?
Brainstorm facts about Visual Learners
What do we know about visual learners?
This is one tool that could be used for visual learners
to organize information across different subjects
This is just one way that visual learners may choose to
learn it is written down and may help people study
Slide 6: Reflect - How do you feel about using mind maps to
organize your information you receive in class?
Take 3 minutes and respond with either writing, an
image, or both
Slide 7: Auditory Learner
Play voice recording
30% of the population
Spoken word
Needs to be heard
Who thinks they may be an auditory learner?

Learning Activity
#3

Who feels they would also like to see the information

written down rather than just hearing it?
Who would have been fine with just hearing my voice
tell you the facts about audio file?
Record your thoughts, feelings, and images regarding
auditory learning (3 min)
Slide 9: Kinesthetic Learner
What is kinesthetic?
What do you think a kinesthetic learner would include?
Hands-on, role playing
This is fun, so you may think you are a kinesthetic
learner, but what is important is if it contributes to
your learning in a positive way
In groups of 4, I will pass out a card that identifies
either visual, auditory, or kinesthetic
In less than 30 seconds, I want you to present a brief
skit (roleplay to the group that would showcase your
assigned learning style)
You could role-play a teacher-student example or an at
home study example, tutorial, etc. but it needs to 1530 seconds
You only have 4 minutes to think of an idea!
Brief presentation
Reflect on the kinesthetic.
Which activity did you learn more about the topic?
todays topic was learners
Slide 10: These activities are designed to give you a brief
taste of each learner type, they do not reflect directly what
one might experience as a learner
After the 3 activities, I think that I am a
___________________ learner, because
After the activity and the information you were given
today, what type of learner do you think you are and
why?
Learning Styles Worksheet: Observe the students
reflections on each of the learner styles. How did they feel
about each of the activities? Do they identify accurate
justification for their learning style? (LO 1)
Survey Conclusions (LO 2, 3)
Now that you have briefly gotten a taste of the 3 different
types of learners and guessed from the activities, which type
of learner you are, tally up your survey
Count which letter you have the most of : a, b, or c
A: Visual
B: Auditory
C: Kinesthetic
Does anyone disagree with his or her survey result?
Was the survey the same as what you predicted after
the activities?
Who had two pretty equal results?
On the back of your worksheet, write at least 3 study
habits or school habits that will help you (i.e. visual
learners maps)
Slide 11: Important points
There is no right way of learning each person is
unique and learns differently

Lesson

No one relies on just one style

Individuals can switch from one style to another when
it is helpful
Discussion: Observe the class overall learning styles.
Observe their answer to discussion questions. Do they
understand the 3 learning styles and that everyone is unique?
(LO 1, 3)
Closure
What are the three learning styles we discussed today?
What is one study habit for visual? Auditory? Kinesthetic?
Find a friend who has a different style of learning than your
own survey result.
Describe one study strategy you use and how it
matches your personal learning style
Thank you for working so hard and contributing to class
discussions!
