Internship Summary

My internship this semester with First Horizon National Corp. has been
an extremely valuable experience for me. I was able to increase my
knowledge of FHNCs systems and Microsoft Office suite, become
comfortable in the office environment, create valuable relationships outside
of my department, use and apply problem solving and critical thinking skills,
and gain confidence when presenting and training. I have received a verbal
job offer in FHNCs Accounting Services department, pending graduation.
While working on FHNCs payment system and purchase order system I
was able to apply my knowledge of Excel to manipulate raw data into useful
payment information. I was assigned an EDI Invoice email box to control. This
gave me more exposure to Microsoft Access database software and Outlook.
A main task that I was given was to evaluate and assign general ledger fixed
asset, prepaid maintenance, or expense accounts to branch/ATM location
maintenance and purchases. This allowed me to understand real-world
application of accounting principles. FHNC is currently in the process of
implementing a purchase order system that also has to be compatible with
our payment system. When a batch of payments gets rejected by our
payment system, I have to review the reject report and find the source of the
error. I then present my findings to my supervisor and our Procurement
Department, so the software developers can correct the error. My knowledge
of both of these systems allowed me to create the standard operating
procedures for the ProcureIt system, and train two new hires this semester.
My site supervisor, Justin Hurley, played an integral part in teaching
me what to expect in an office environment and how to conduct myself

appropriately inside the office. Another valuable part of my internship was

the completion of First Horizons Professionalism Frist Program. This program
consisted of seminars on office etiquette, resume writing, interview skills,
emotional intelligence, and networking. My position in the Accounts Payable
department allowed me to learn to communicate and work with others
outside of my department, increasing my business communication and
teamwork skills. Multiple times throughout the semester the interns were
able to meet several of FHNCs upper management, including the CEO Bryan
Jordan. During these meetings we were able to gain career advice and
insight to how each department effects achieving corporate goals.
After gaining a working knowledge of FHNCs new ProcureIt system, I
was tasked with creating the standard operating procedures in a training
PowerPoint for the system. This allowed me to gain confidence when
presenting in front of management and when training new hires. This
responsibility gave me my first opportunity to provide leadership and
guidance. I have included a copy of this presentation as a sample of my work
for this portfolio.
I believe that the knowledge and experience I gained during this
semesters internship will help me at my new position and throughout my
career. The courses I have taken that I believe helped me the most through
this experience are: Accounting Systems (ACCT 4020), Intermediate
Accounting II (ACCT 3120), and Business Communication (MGMT 3510).
