Lesson 3 Cultures

Continents, Countries & Cultures Unit

Grade / Age Level: K3 ESL Kindergartners age 5-6.


Subject Area: Geography / Learning English as a second language.
Time allotted for Lesson: One, 1 hour lesson.
Lesson Description: This lesson is intended to teach my students about some Cultures of
different Countries around the World. They will learn a little about what people look like
around the world as well as different food from Countries. We will also talk about what
Countries the students want to go to.

Curriculum Standards met: My privately owned Kindergarten does not follow any
curriculum standards. The goal of our lessons is to incorporate new English vocabulary,
sentence structures and phrases into each theme based lesson. We are currently developing
a more structured curriculum.

Instructional Objectives: After completing this Cultures lesson, The students will be
able to:

Explain where a person is from.

Describe where different foods are from.

Tell the class where they want to go and why.

Instructional Procedures:
Lesson Introduction: I will introduce this lesson with a review of Continents and
Countries. We will have a brief class discussion about some cultural things in Japan
like Sumo, Kimonos and Sushi. I will show the students a flash with a picture of a
woman in a Kimono and ask the students to repeat, She's from Japan. I will then
introduce the flash cards of people from around the world and have the students
repeat the names of the Country and ask where they are from.

Lesson Activities: During the lesson I will also introduce foods and animals from
different Countries around the world. We we discuss the different flags from around
the world and the shapes used to design them. The students will then be given a
blank flag to design and color anyway they like. We will also play a game using the
large laminated Continent cards, I will place each Continent around the classroom as

if the classroom floor is a world map. I will ask the student where a food, person, or
animal is from, and the kids will all gather and stand by the Country.

Lesson Closure: At the end of the lesson the students will each get the chance to
tell the class where they want to go and why. Finally I will give the students a writing
worksheet, Where is it from?. The students will write the correct sentence for
each food.

Adaptations for Special Learners: This lesson was created for ESL students. Other
adaptations for special learners will be as follows. Special Learners will be allotted
additional time in completing the worksheet. A bilingual teacher assistant will also be
available to assist those who need additional help.

Supplemental Activities:

Extensions: An additional activity will be provided to those who want/need it in the


form of drawing additional foods on the back of the worksheet and writing where it
is from.

Remediation: Playing a game with the people of the world flash cards will be used to
provide a fun way for confirmation of understanding.

Assessment / Evaluation: The evaluation process will be done informally. Monitoring


the students involvement in the activities will be done during the lesson. I will confirm that
the students can explain where a person, food or animal is from. At the end of the lesson
the students will complete a worksheet and I will check each one individually and give
verbal feedback on their performance.

Learner Products: The students will have colored their own designed flag. The students
will have a completed worksheet, Where is it from?
