IMPEDIMENTS IN THE MOVIE JOHN Q

1 As the film opens, a young woman is driving a sedan down a rural-looking


highway. Her progress impeded by a slow-moving truck, she attempts to pass it
by moving into the oncoming lane of traffic. Suddenly, a second truck looms in
the oncoming lane, and the woman's rear fender is clipped by the second truck.
The woman fishtails and comes to a stop in front of the first truck, which collides
with her car, killing the woman. (ERROR)
2 John Q sold all of the family's saleable assets to cash to meet the hospital
administrator's requirement of an up-front deposit to assure a place for the boy
on the transplant list. (GRAVE FEAR)
3 Denise urges John to do something. (PASSION-ANTECEDENT)
4 Unwilling to let his child die, John walks into the hospital ER with a handgun,
gathers hostages, and sets demands: his son's name on the recipient list as soon
as possible. (GRAVE FEAR)
5 A man shoves John Q, sprays him in the eyes with mace and stabs him in the
shoulder with a scalpel.
(RELATIVE VIOLENCE)
6 After taking the shot, the sniper's leg falls through the ceiling tiles and the
outraged John pulls him out of the air shaft and beats him up. (PASSIONANTECEDENT)
7 John Q used the bound SWAT policeman as a human shield as he steps outside
to the sight of dozens of policemen pointing weapons at him. John demands that
his son be brought to the emergency room. (GRAVE FEAR)
8 Rebecca Payne, the hospital director keeps on smoking even if theres a lifethreatening situation happening. (HABIT-VICES)
9 Then John Q demands that his son be taken to him in the emergency room.
When he gets there he says that his plan all along was to kill himself and have
James Woods give his son his heart which happens to be a match. (PASSION
CONSEQUENT)
10 John Q forces Dr. Turner to perform the operation, and two of his hostages bear
witness to a will stating his last request. (RELATIVE VIOLENCE)
