Lesson Title:

Adding and Subtracting Mixed Number Fractions

Grade/Age Level:
5th Grade

Subject Area:
Math

Time allotted for the lesson:

3 one hour sessions

Short description of lesson (write a brief, yet concise description

of what occurs in this lesson):

Students will learn to add and subtract mixed number fractions. Background
information will be introduced to level students understanding of mixed
numbers. Special attention will be given to subtracting mixed numbers which
may involve borrowing from the whole number.

State Curriculum Standards met in this lesson:

5.NF.A.1 Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including

mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in
such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with
like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In
general, a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd.)

Instructional Objectives:
Students will understand that mixed fractions are fractions greater than 1
and can also be written as improper fractions.
Students will convert improper fractions and mixed numbers.
Students will add and subtract mixed number fractions.
Students will subtract mixed number fractions with regrouping.

Instructional Procedures
Session 1: Mixed Numbers and Converting Fractions
1. Watch the Math Antics video providing students with background
information about mixed numbers.
2. Discussion- What do students know about adding and subtracting
mixed numbers?
3. Introduce the graphics for converting mixed numbers and
improper fractions.
4. Practice conversions using online games.

5. Homework: Students will add an example of improper fractions

and mixed numbers to their Improper Fraction and Mixed Number
conversion organizers in their math journal.
Session 2: Adding and Subtracting with Mixed Numbers
1. Watch the LearnZillion video on adding and subtracting mixed
numbers.
2. Students will complete online practice of adding mixed numbers,
then subtracting mixed numbers.
3. After completion, difficulty increases as students move to word
problems including addition and subtraction mixed numbers.
4. Homework: Students will create an adding and subtracting page
in their math journal showing the steps and an example of each
type of problem.

Session 3: Subtracting Mixed Numbers with Regrouping

1. Watch the Learnzillion video teaching the concept of regrouping
fractions for subtraction.
2. Practice several problems together making sure students
understand the concept.
3. Students will complete the worksheet independently.
4. Homework: Students will create a word problem and picture in
their math journal showing regrouping when subtracting mixed
numbers.

Adaptations for special learners

Games are set up to increase in difficulty to allow for all learning levels. All
students are not expected to complete every game during the allotted time.
Some skills taught in the lesson are review from previous grade. Graphic
organizers will support struggling learners as new skills are introduced.

Supplemental Activities:
Differentiated assignments have been built in to the lesson.
Extended activity- Challenge game Word Problem Recipes
Remedial activities- Students may review videos and replay games as
needed. Additional worksheets can be created at http://www.mathaids.com/Fractions/Reducing_Fractions.html

Assessment/Evaluation
Formative (Informal) Evaluation- Online games (teachers may request
screenshots of player scores), self-graded worksheet, completed math
journal pages.
Summative (Formal) Evaluation- End of Chapter Test given at the end of the
unit.
