SOL:

2. USI2b- The student will use maps, globes, photographs, pictures or tables to
a. Locate and describe the location of the geographic regions of North
America: Coastal Plain, Appalachian Mountains, Canadian Shield,
Interior Lowlands, Great Plains, Rocky Mountains, Basin and Range, and
Coastal Range.
Content Outline:
Analyze and interpret maps to explain relationships among landforms and water
features. (USI.1f)
Distinguish between parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude. (USI.1g)
Rationale:
It is important for the students to know so that they can understand how to find
geographical locations and the relationships between them.
Objectives:
TSWBAT locate longitude and latitude coordinates on a map and understand their
function.
TSWBAT locate geographical regions of the United States on a map.
TSWBAT locate the worlds continents and oceans.
Lesson Opening:
Students will be given U.S. History to 1865: Review #1 at the beginning of class
and will complete Mondays review questions quietly on their own. (6 mins.)
Connection:
Students will be able to use prior knowledge and lessons to name the U.S.
geographic regions, hemispheres, and lines of latitude and longitude.
Instructional Strategies/Processes:
1. The desks in the classroom are divided into eight groups of three.
2. The class will first go over the answers to U.S. History to 1865: Review #1.
(5 mins.)
3. The class will review the homework worksheet (Geographic Regions of North
America) that was assigned on Thursday night. (10 mins.)

4. The class will then begin their Jeopardy review game for USI.2a-b. Students
will be given a JEOPARDY! map to help them with the game. Students will
work as teams with the rest of their group. (25 mins.)

Assessment:
Students will be given a grade for correctness and completion for Geographic
Regions of North America. Students answers to Jeopardy questions will be
informally assessed. A formal assessment of the material will be given in the
form of a USI.2a-b test given Tuesday, September 1.
Closure:
To briefly review, I will call on students to give me the names of the seven
continents and five oceans and to give me the order of the U.S. geographic
regions on a map.
Homework:
Study for test.
Differentiation:
Jeopardy questions are ordered from hardest to easiest. Students will know that
the difficulty of the questions corresponds to the amount of points awarded per
question. They will be allowed to pick the difficulty of their own questions.
Materials:
Worksheets (under products), computer (to access Jeopardy online), projector (to
allow students to read the questions on the front board).
