Therewasagainsomecanopyformationduringwinter198384,butthesurfacetemperatureincreased

canopyalsodisappearedfaster.TemperaturefinallyreturnedtothemeaninNovember1984
andthecanopybegantorecoverquickly.Therewasnothermalstressin1985butthegiant
kelpcanopyatPointLomadeclinedbyalmost60%fromJanuarytoJulyduetoaninfestation
ofgrazingamphipods,apparentlyasecondaryeffectoftheElNino.
