Writing to Learn Interview
Interviewer- Brian Hobbs
Interviewee- Sam Rice
1. What is the goal of the tennis team?
a. To win the conference tournament. With a win in the conference tournament, it
could open up new opportunities for the team in the future.
2. What is your personal goal?
a. To have a positive win to loss ratio. With a good win loss ratio, I will be able to
move up in the team.
3. What are practices like?
a. Practices are well-structured and it has a good intensity. The practices are relaxed
and fun at the same time.
4. What is the difference between America and home?
a. America is bigger. The cars, the houses and just about everything is bigger.
5. Do you like the facilities at Charlotte?
a. The facilities are very new. The locker rooms are nice, a little small but nothing
extreme.
6. Is Charlotte your new home?
a. England is still home. I feel at home in Charlotte, but I still call England my
home.
7. What are the games like?
a. Extremely competitive. The competition is on par with Europe.
8. How do you interact with your teammates?
a. I have a good chemistry with my teammates. We all get along, but sometimes we
can get on each others nerves. All of this is normal.

9. How do you interact with your coach?


a. Coach is open to any conversation. He likes to talk a lot, and we like this because
we can say anything we want to him. He has developed a good relationship with
all of the players.
10. How do you interact with the trainers?
a. The trainers are consistently good. They are always at practice and they are
always willing to help you with any problem.
11. What is traveling with the team like?
a. The team gets on well and has very good conversations with each other. I havent
been able to travel far yet, but Im sure I will be able to travel more with the team
in the future.

Reflection- Doing the research was not bad. Sam was open to all of the questions and responded
well. Everything was comfortable in the interview. Nothing felt uncomfortable. All of the
questions were basic and was not hard for him to answer. He was with his other teammates, so if
he couldnt think of something off of the top of his head, they were able to help him. I learned a
lot about how the team interacts. Most of the observations I made about how the team practices
was similar to what Sam had to say. What I couldnt gain from the observations at the practice,
Sam gave me insight about it. Nothing from my observations were wrong, I just gained more
information that what I already had.
