Writing Prompt 1
Everyone has a different learning style, and even more than that most people have
different learning styles for different subjects. Mine for reading and writing is probably similar to
most other children in that my parents are the first who introduced me to reading and writing, I
faced a challenge while learning, and had a certain tactic that would help me learn.
While I am sure that there were many instances before these in which I started learning
how to read and right, the first vivid memory I have would be during my older sisters travel
basketball games, which started when I was around five. My mom would bring a little backpack
to all the games that contained various books and different notepads and she would help me read
or learn words in the books and would write different letters of the alphabet and have me copy
them down the exact way she wrote them. I continued to advance my learning in this aspect by
reading harder books and writing longer and more difficult words. A favorite book series of
mine when I was younger would have to be The Boxcar Children series; I liked these books
because they had adventurous and interesting plots that always came with a twist.
A challenge that I faced while learning to read and write would be that when I was
younger I was slightly dyslexic. I would have trouble differentiating sixes and nines and be
confused when it came to writing ws and ms, also bs and ds, I would sometimes even read
numbers backwards. It was never a serious problem but it did make the learning process a little
more difficult than I figure most kids had it. I eventually grew out of my dyslexia and became a

better than average writer moving into advanced writing courses starting in middle school and
lasting through high school.
Besides my mother, another person who greatly influenced my ability to read and write
was my first and second grade teacher, Mrs. Jordan, and her mother, who was her teaching
assistant. They would allocate at least an hour of class each week to work with an individual
student on developing their writing skills. I believe that these two women impacted my learning
to read and write in a very significant way.
My literacy narrative is one probably most like any other average childs. My mother and
father started me off by reading me books at bedtime or whenever, then a teacher early on in my
educational career contributed in some way, most children faced challenges when learning to
read and write, mine just happened to be a mild case of dyslexia. What Im saying is that my
story may be similar to other children but it is what worked for me and helped me become an
exceptional literature student.
