Dear Recruiter
I am looking for an optimistic and hopeful opportunity to become the newest member of the Arubanet
team. I would like to apply for the position opened advertised through our corporate email. My
experience on other projects and a knowledge of wireless access points and RADIUS and TACACS+
authentication protocols prove to be an effective aggregate to the Arubanet project team.
Currently, I am a time student working towards a Bachelor degree in Information Technology. In my
education experience I have passed exams that require a working knowledge to troubleshoot wireless
access points and prove an understanding of RADIUS and TACACS+ authentication protocols. I have an
understanding of configuring Point-to-Point connections on routers and enabling them with CHAPs and
other authentication protocols that point to a server configured to run RADIUS or TACACS+ services.
I am currently working on three various projects at a level 1 technical skill. I have gained the required
troubleshooting mindset that is essential for this opened position. My communication skills allow me to
accurately instruct the end user of any needed steps that must be performed that I cant physically do
myself.

experiences. Reliability is a strong suite that I will reflect as I am a self-starter and as I stay on task. I am
adaptable to not only circumstances but to people, benefiting to the team and to the individual needs
of any given customer.
I gladly welcome an interview at your convenience. I look forward to discussing further possibility of
contributing and becoming part of the team. I look forward to hearing from you about this position. I
can be contacted at 801.680.1418.

OSPF
Description of OSPF
Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) is a link-state routing protocol that is widely implemented in current networks (FIgure 1). Its ability
to scale from small networks to large networks makes it a desirable method connecting network devices together such as computer,
routers, servers, and other pertinent technology needed to transmit data. Depicted in the diagram of a network running OSPF on
the routers you can see that the network is broken into areas. Each area is depicted as only having a few router, but in reality each
router could represent 20 routers each, or more.
In order for routers to transmit data to the end destination, such as a users computer, they need know where to send the data. A
logical component of routers functionality is whats called the routing table. The routing table is a database that routers look at to
determine where to send the data it has received. What makes this part of OSPF is how a router running OSPF builds this data base.
Each router sends out Link-state Advertisements that propagates throughout the area becoming aware of each router and where it
can send data, and each router becomes aware of where it is located within that network. This builds whats called the Link-sate
Database. From that database; also referred to as the topology, each router will build its unique routing table from the network
topology.
Another component pertinent to the functionality of OSPF are called Link-state Packets also known as Hello packets. Routers send
the advertisements only to their neighbors which form adjacency tables. The neighboring routers establish on how often these advertisements are sent. These advertisements stabilize the network because as soon as the hello advertisement dies then its
neighbor routers will send out an LSA telling the area that that specific router is down. This allows other routers to update their
topology. In another situation when a router is added a Hello packet is sent to an established neighbor router which then sends
out an LSA packet informing the area of a new aggregate and how to route data to the new router.

Election of Router Roles

The ideology behind OSPF is for fast and stable performance. In order to maintain the idea of optimally routing data, the OSPF
meth-od requires routers to fulfill roles. These roles are as follows (Figure 1):

Area Border Router

Area Border Routers or for short ABRs lie on the border of the backbone are, or area 0, and one other area. These router do
not forward LSA advertisements from one area to another as the other areas do not need know each others topologies.
Although they dont route LSAs they do route other types of traffic so areas can communicate with each other.

Designated Router

The Designated Router, or DR, lies within the area and centralizes the topology. It is responsible for updating other routers
within the same area with LSAs when changes are made in the area. Routers that arent designated as the DR will send LSAs
to the DR instead of their neighbors, then the DR sends LSA to all other routers within the area.

Backup Designated Router

The Backup Designated Router is the same as the Designated Router, but is inactive until the DR goes down. Its a redundant
measure, which in networking is a good.

DROTHER

DROTHER Routers are all other routers not assigned the role as Designated or Backup Designated Routers.

There is a process in which the DR and BDR are elected. Each router that operates with the OSPF protocol active is assigned a router
ID (Figure 2). There are three different ways in which the router ID is assigned to the router. The priority, highest IP address assigned
to a loopback interface, or the highest IP address assigned to an Ethernet port are always in which a router might be assigned a
rout-er ID. Each attribute do not have equal preference. Priority is preferred over the highest IP addressed assigned to a loopback
inter-face, and the loopback interface is preferred over the Ethernet port assigned with the highest IP address. All routers by
default have priority of 1. If a router has a priority of 0 then it will never be elected as a DR or BDR.

Abstract
The report reviews the organizational culture and styles of writing of two companies in the
Information Technology field: Executech and Ixia. In the methodology section of the report it
explains that the websites of each company and personal interviews are used to gather
information about each companys culture and styles of writing. The results from the research
disclose the level of education required in order to work for each company, samples and what
genres/styles of writing are generated by each company, and interview answers from employees
from each company. Later the report discusses how the level of education and requirements to
work for each company help determine the culture, how analyzing a sample of writing/genre
styles reveal aspects of each companys culture, giving an expectation of what styles will be
used, and what can be gathered from personal interviews to help determine the culture of each
company. The report concludes by suggesting which company is better to work for and why.

Introduction
This analytical report reviews and offers insight about the workplace environment and
analysis of the styles of writing of Executech and Ixia, which I would like to potentially work for
in the IT field. Analyzing the organizational culture and style of writings/genres educates me
whether working for Exutech is better than working for Ixia, helping me decide a lifetime career.
For background purposes I would like to inform the reader briefly about each company.
Executech is a local IT company with less than 50 employees here in Utah. They focus on IT
consulting for other companies. Ixia is a premier, worldwide company with its headquarters in
Calabasas, California that develops software, hardware and also consults for other companies in
the IT industry.

Methodology
In order to analyze the culture and styles of writings of these companies I used the
Internet and personal interviews.

Internet Resources
I used the websites of each company www.Executech.com and www.Ixiacom.com to
gather hints of culture about the organizations and for sources of styles of writing/genre.

Personal Interview
I sent questions to an employee from each company, Stephen from Executech and Niv
from Ixia; asking them about their experiences with the organizational culture and styles of
writing gained working for their perspective companies.

Professional Portfolio

11

Results
The websites of each company provide information to potential employees of what
requirements they must meet in order to work for the perspective companies. On the career tab of
Executech the requirements to work for them are as follows: Candidates must be proficient in
performing

Microsoft Network administration

Troubleshooting routers
Troubleshooting firewalls
Troubleshooting servers
Computer repair
Building custom computers
(Executech, 2015)

This is was the only information given about the requirements to work for Executech. From one
of many job listings on Ixias career tab here are some of the requirements for an Information
Security Engineer position
8+ years of work experience in an information security.

5+ years of risk management experience with proven ability to effectively apply risk principles to
challenging business situations.
Must display strong subject matter experience in application security, vulnerability testing and
development of a risk appetite.
Maintain a knowledge and understanding of attacks, vectors and emerging threats.
Expertise building security scripts and tools development, developing new automation systems and APIs.
Bachelors degree in Information Security or equivalent experience is desired.
Information Security Certification preferred CISSP, CISM, GIAC.
(Ixia Communications, 2015)

Not only did each website provide information about job opportunities but also sources of
writing styles and genres.
Executechs website provides a limited amount of writing on its website to evaluate. The style
and genre of writing presents the services that Executech provides to clients with the emphasis to
advertise its services. Ixias website provides many different types of writing styles and genres.

Professional Portfolio

12

The website provides samples of job descriptions, case studies, manuals for the products and
software they develop, white papers and more. Another genre of writing found on Ixias
website is a video of employees talking about Ixias culture, which focuses on impressing
customers, innovating new technologies and developing the employees. Apart from using each
companys website as resources, interviews were used to gain perspective of organizational
culture and styles of writings of each company.
In his interview, Stephen Gee, a technician for Executech, said concerning his work load.
Most of my job is all initiative based, they [employees] have complete control and are
encouraged to take full ownership of tasks (personal communication, Sept 1, 2015). In the
interview he said his work holds yearly retreats and company Christmas parties where they invite
employees and their families to gather and spend time outside of work to foster family and friend
time.
An email interview was sent to Niv Dolgin, the IT Department head of Ixia. He said that
he would answer the questions but never responded.

Discussion
As a future possible employee for a business like Executech or Ixia I was curious about
the level of education and experience each company requires. This helps me with two aspects:
the aspect of knowing what education and experience I need in order to work for each company
and what the people are like that contribute to the culture of each company. For example, here is
part of Executechs career tab

Professional Portfolio

13

We are an exciting and fun company looking for multiple technicians of all skill levels to be part of our
team. Expand your careeryou will learn more in one year at Executech than you will in ten elsewhere.
This position is for a full-time, well trained technician ready to begin working immediately with a full skill
set. Must be very proficient on Windows Networks (Server OS, Windows 7 & 8, Domains, etc). This
positions salary will be based upon your skill level. (Executech, 2015)

The requirements do not specify that an individual needs a degree or a certain amount of
experience measured in time, only that the applicant has a certain set of skills they are looking
for. I was able to get a good idea of Executechs culture and writing styles when comparing its
level of education and requirements for future employees to the level of education and
requirements of Ixias.
I would like to restate Ixias job listing stated in the methodology section regarding the
requirements of the Information Security Engineer position
8+ years of work experience in an information security.
5+ years of risk management experience with proven ability to effectively apply risk principles to
challenging business situations.
Must display strong subject matter experience in application security, vulnerability testing and
development of a risk appetite.
Maintain a knowledge and understanding of attacks, vectors and emerging threats.
Expertise building security scripts and tools development, developing new automation systems and APIs.
Bachelors degree in Information Security or equivalent experience is desired.
Information Security Certification preferred CISSP, CISM, GIAC.

In addition I would like to add this paragraph from the same job listing
To make these advanced technologies, our company fosters creativity, encourages innovation, and rewards
self-motivation and hard work. Our employees use their passion for excellence to help solve our customers
toughest challenges. Join the Ixia team and be a part of our future.

Ixians requirements of employment are more specific and require more than Executechs. They
specify certifications that are required; a Bachelors degree and years of experience in two
different areas. What identifies the culture more than the requirements is contained in the quoted
paragraph. Ixia is looking for someone to help advance technologies, who innovates and is
creative, and has passion for excellence.

Professional Portfolio

14

Ixias culture makes me feel like I have to know it all. With that much level of education
and experience to work for Ixia I would feel that more innovation, education, and experience is
required or expected. With Executech, I feel like I need to know how to do the job and do it well,
because its a place to expand my career. I feel it would be a good starting point with my
current level of education and experience. The level of education/requirements is the first aspect
I am interested in. The second aspect is the people of each company.
The type of people I would expect to find at Executech are people that are interested in
having a good job that allows time for family. The type of people I would expect to find at Ixia
are work driven individuals that probably dedicate more time to work than they would like. From
evaluating this aspect I think that the people at Executech are less stressed about deadlines or
project due dates than the employees of Ixia. I feel confident to say that I would be in a much
more stressful environment working for Ixia. To glean more insight about the culture I would
like to discuss the styles of writing and genres I can expect to use for each company.
My expectations of what type of writing I will do for Executech are limited to how they
present their services in writing on their website. Here is a sample that demonstrates and reveals
the type of writing that can be expected and a part of Executechs culture.

(Executech, 2015)

This writing sample shows that a large part of Executechs culture is based in client
relationships. The sentences before the bullet points of promises reads, Tired of technology
headaches? Call Executech and your IT pain will end. The purpose of this writing entices
businesses with assurance that Exexutech is up to par in providing IT outsourcing services. Other
emphasis such as exclamations marks instead of periods and capitalizations of an entire word
emphasizes even more that Executechs culture is strongly based in client relationships. The
writing is simple and not very formal.
Ixia is a much larger company and offers more products and service. There is more
writing to generate and different genres used. Another form of communication I would like to
include is a video from Ixias website about their culture. This video shows Ixia employees
talking about Ixian culture. The employees discuss the core values of the company. The focus is
to wow their customers, to trust, respect and develop their people, to listen and be open, to be
passionate, courageous and decisive, to win with teamwork and collaboration, and to celebrate
with excellence (Ixia Communications, 2015). Another source of information to discuss are the
answers from the interview questions.

Professional Portfolio

16

I had the opportunity to interview Stephen Gee. To summarize what he said is that the
work load is initiated by the employee and gave examples of how Executech creates culture that
supports a balance between work and family. This interview helps me to understand on a more
personal basis what it might be like to work for Executech. I can expect them to have a degree of
balance between work life and home life. I also confirmed with Niv Doglin to an email
interview; though he agreed he would respond, the answers were never received. The lack of the
answers can help me understand some aspects of Ixias culture. I feel safe to assume that he was
busy with work. If I work for Ixia I could expect to be busier than I would be if I worked at
Executech.
Analyzing the websites of each company for hints of culture and writing styles allows me
to easily distinguish the differences between each company. The comparison of the writing
styles/genre and culture illuminates that the organization of Ixia is more hierarchal and that
Executech is a pool of technicians on the same level all doing the same thing. Ixias culture is
more at an enterprise level requiring more writing and innovation. Executechs culture is at a
professional level requiring to be proficient at providing excellent service to the clients.

Conclusion and Recommendations

From reviewing the websites and responses from the interview questions I get a feel of
the culture of each company. Executech is a professional company that expects their employees
to proactively maintain relations with clients in a knowledgeable and professional style.
Expected writing requirements are limited to informal communication between associates and
clients. Ixia is a professional enterprise that expects their employees to innovate new ideas and
products and maintain relationships with clients. Expected writing requirements include day to

Professional Portfolio

day informal writing and formal writing such as reports, case studies and other styles. I could
expect to neglect family time more working at Ixia than I would at Executech. After reviewing
these companies I recommend to myself to work for a company like Executech, because I am
more interested in a good balance between family and career, and not just moving up the career
ladder.
