Each of our ancestors came to America from Europe during different time
periods
Their reasons, experiences and outcomes differ from each other
This is what makes America a cultural melting pot

Scandinavia/Sweden - Cheap land (Wisconsin and Minnesota)
Irish - Catholics denied rights (Pennsylvania, New England)

Taxation caused people to leave

1800-1899 Hardships of Travel

Still took weeks to both leave and traverse the ocean


Steamships (mid 1800s) shortened distance to days
Railroads meant faster travel to ports
Fairly easy to go to America
In late 1880s, laws regulated immigration due to illnesses

The 2000s

2000-2015 How Much Has Actually Changed?

Immigration to America is still quite common today

Many people come for opportunities within education and jobs


Others come for safety

Disagreement is still present

Despite American historys heavy reliance on immigrants, policies are still written today
regarding immigration.

2000-2015 How Much Has Actually Changed?

Planes have greatly shortened travel times


Countries of origin are more diverse
In many ways, the quality of life has improved for most immigrants over the
years

Some Americans discriminate (in the same ways as they have in history)
Usually immigrants are still less accepted into society until second generations

Jobs acquired are diverse - some immigrants receive well paying jobs immediately whilst
others suffer low pay and demand for long hours
instant safety is experienced by those from areas in conflict
