Taylor, Quintard, United States History: Timelines, University of Washington,

Quintard documents the history of
11/8/2015,
the US using a timeline. It starts off
http://staff.washington.edu/qtaylor/a_us_history/us_timeline_index_page.htm in the pre-colonial time period
when there were no Europeans in
America. Quintard then states the
events during colonization up to
the year 2000 AD. Quintard goes
into details about certain key
elements in US history like the
revolutionary war. He also goes
into cold war and the events
outside of the US. These events
focus on how countries around the
USSR were becoming communist.
This reinforces why the US became
a main player in the cold war. He
doesnt go into the civil as much as
the cold war or the revolutionary
war though. He mostly notes a few
key battles in the civil war.

annexation of Hawaii. It details how
the US imported sugar cane from
the island. This importation was
good for the sugar cane farmers of
Hawaii because it allowed for a new
market. The current government
presiding over the island was a
monarchy. The US had good
relations with Hawaii and its
people and still did after the
annexation. Due to a recent import

This source went over the history of
Rome in terms of Caesar. It went
over why Rome was not a republic
but an empire. It stated because
generals promised land to its
legionaries it had to conquer a lot
of land. This means that you have
land that does not initially belong
to you or people like you. This
means you have an empire. This
trend was constant through the
empires history. When the Caesar
took control of Rome becoming
consul and dictator many senators
said that he caused the death of the
republic. However, Caesar did not
cause the death of the republic
because by the definition of empire
it was already dead. We see that
Rome has had a long tradition of its
dictators invading Rome itself.
This source went over the structure
of the Roman military in the fourth
century AD. The military was
divided into two groups. One group
was used as a mobile strike force.

Rome is not like the US in

many people actively
avoided the draft.

This group had kept the physical

standards that were used in the
previous centuries. The second
group was more stationary. They
were used to defend forts and
areas surrounding Germanic tribes.
The soldiers in this group could
have lower physical standards
because they were more stationary.
If the forts came under attack and
this group could not hold it for long
the first group mentioned would
come and wipe out the invading
force. The source also goes over
conscription and how the Roman
empire needed troops. The pay
during this period was not good
and the punishments were still
brutal so many citizens removed
their thumbs in order to avoid
conscription into the military.
This source is a rather short
investigation into how Rome and
the US are similar. It starts off by
talking about a book that compares
Rome and the US. It then talks
about Romes Julius Caesar. In his
life he acquired new land for Rome.
In one of these attempts to gain
new land he attacked the area of
Germany. He was unsuccessful at
capturing easily and lost several
legions. He then was very angry
about this and declared the area as

This is really good to

a frontier. The main reason the

author was using this information is
because the area has been pin
pointed recently. To add to this
several indicators point to their
being another large battle in the
area. The article then goes into how
our beginnings are like happened in
Rome. We went to war with the
natives and formed governments in
order to secure land. We also
purchased some land but we
mostly invaded other peoples land.
This source covers a wide area of
my topic. I have reasons why Rome
fell, the history of Rome, and a list
of emperors. It states the fall of
Rome was caused by many reasons.
However, the two most important
of these are the mass immigration
of Germanic people into Rome and
the decision to allow the Visigoths
across the river Rome held. It also
states the events that were
happening at the time all this was
happening. It goes into details
about the history of Rome being
started by two twins raised by
wolves and one killed the other for
more control. Although it is a myth
it was an ethos passed down in
much of Rome history. This was an
ethos that is most seen by most of
the emperors in Roman history

conquest. It then goes on to tell
about more early history of Rome.
Before it was a republic or an
Empire, Rome was a monarchy
having a king in control. This
changed after a series of wars and
kings were removed in order to
have a consul and later a senate. It
also goes over the first dictator
Rome had. He was chosen to fight
against the Sabines and other
tribes.
The second chapter of this book
deals with the strategy of the
Roman Empire. The general
strategy of the Roman empire for
border protection was a system of
walls and forts that spanned
around the areas being protected
from the barbarians. This was
economical for the Roman empire.
At this time a wealthy person in
Rome could pay the cost of the
military. The Romans were also
more tactically and technically
proficient than their dissolute
enemies. A normal battle would be
in the favor of the Romans. They
used their knowledge of logistics in
order to supply their troops for long
campaigns. They also were more
organized on the field of battle.
They used thin lines of men to out

flank their enemies and give troops

a chance to rest before going back
into battle.
Chester Starr highlights the
problems going on in Rome at the
time before the collapse as well as
the history around that time. The
topics he goes into includes
religion, the divide between the
west and east, massive military,
taxation, and the diversity of Rome.
He highlights that because Rome
was so big it required a large
military. This large army consisted
of both Roman citizens and
mercenaries from the barbaric
tribes around it. These two groups
needed money and to provide it the
Roman empire taxed its people
heavily. The author states that in
this period of time the taxes on the
citizens of Rome doubled. Rome
also didnt stop at protecting its
own land too. It sought to conquer
new land meaning it required a
greater amount of troops which
meant more taxation. This
annexation of lands surrounding
Rome lead to a greater diversity
among Roman people. Another key
issue was the rise of Christianity in
Rome. This played a large role in
the fall of Rome due to many newly
converted Christians switching their

Crash course goes over the fall of

the roman empire. Starting off they
describe the two most widely
accepted reasons for the fall which
are the barbarians outside the gate
and the barbarians inside the gate
theory. The barbarians outside the
gate theory focuses around the
idea that because Rome was facing
a huge amount of barbarians it
could not sustain long-term
existence. The barbarians inside the
gate theory states that because
Rome had a habit of adding people
to its civilization that werent
roman. This created disloyalty
among the people being
assimilated into the roman empire.
This intern caused many of the
captured people to support a man
rather than Rome. When
barbarians were added into the
roman army this made the problem
a lot worse. This video also
followed the birth of eastern Rome
and how it outlived western Rome.
The whole of eastern Rome was not
really roman but more Greeks
assimilated after Rome had
conquered them. Although the
eastern half of Rome long outlived
western Rome it is still long gone.

Is the united states doing

anything like Rome with
the current wars?
Is what happened with
the Native America like
what happened in Rome?
Are our barbarians
terrorists and guerrilla
fighters?

Western Rome is what we mostly

think about when talking about
Rome however.

This article seems to focus on how

the Roman empire mostly fell
because of emperor Constantine.
It focuses on how Rome was
changed inside its gates rather than
outside. It goes into how
Christianity played a role in its fall.
Due to the popularization of
Christianity many of Romes
traditions were destroyed. It also
states that because Christianity
became the main religion the
emperor lost some power due to
the traditional polytheism
promoting them. Christianity also
influenced the poor making them
feel equal to the emperor because
of how scripture taught all men

were created equally. This also led

to the rebellion of slaves. This
article also details the fall of the
economy being one of the major
players in its fall. As inflation wept
through and the government had to
trade with the eastern empire for
luxury resources. The decline of
Rome was heavily blamed on
emperor Constantine by this article
because he was Christian and
abandoned the west in order to
grow the east and have a more
suitable place for Christianity to
grow.
