IllneverforgetmyfirstsightingofabigEasternCoyote.Itwasona
darkgreyNovembermorningabout15minutesafterlegalshooting
lightontheopeningdayofwhitetailseasonmanyyearsago.Itlefta
lastingimpressiononayounghunter.

Ihadcrepttotheedgeofanexpansivebogunderthecoverof
darknesshopingtocatchaglimpseofthebigwhitetailbuckwehad
seenhereatdaybreakacoupletimesduringourpreseasonscouting
trips.Itwasoneofthosemorningswheregoodshootinglightseemed
totakeforevertocomearound.

Eventuallythemurkygreynessyieldeditsgripasdaylightslowly
rolledaroundenoughtowhereIcouldseeahundredyardsormore.A
smalldoeghostedpastmeatabout75yardsataquickpacedtrother

tailheldhigh.Ihunkereddownabitinthehopesthebigbuckwason
herbacktrail.

WhatIsawnexthadmereachingformybinoculars.Alonecoyote
wasonthedoestrail.Hewouldwalkabitandstoptosurveyhis
surroundings.Hisgreywintercoatblendedwiththeovercastskyand
drabfalllandscapeofthebogperfectly.Hewaspower,beauty,speed
andsavagenessallrolledintoonepackage.

IhadseencoyotesonoutofProvincehuntsbeforebutIhadnever
seenonesolargeandwolflike.Manybiologistsareoftheopinion
thatthesecoyotesduringtheirEasternmigrationhavebredwith
wolvesand/ordogsalongthewaycreatingamuchbiggerversionof
thewesterncoyotesmostofusarefamiliarwith.Thesecoydogsor
coywolvesastheyareoftenreferredtocanreachsomeimpressive
weights.

Bigmaleswillsometimestipthescalesatover70lbsafewwillgo
evenheavier.Andthatmyfriendsisonebigcoyote.Althoughcursed
bymanyhunters,somehowforme,theyhaveaddedtotheoverall
enjoymentofmytimeinthewoods.Hearingapackofcoyoteslight
upthewoodswiththeirlonglonesomehowlsanyeveningonstandis
asoundIenjoyhearing.ItletsmeknowImnottheonlyhunter
prowlingthewoodsandputsthingsinperspectiveinastrangeway.
ImjustanothercogIthewheel.Asmallpartofthebigpicture.

Althoughnotapopularopinionamongstmanyhunters,acertain
smallpartofmecanrelatetothemaspredators.Iguessinoneform
oranotherIcanidentifywiththeirquestforgameandevenperhaps
sharetheirexcitementinthehunt.Itmustbesomekindofpredatory
bond!


Theydokillasubstantialnumberofdeerwhichdoesntendearthem
towhitetailhuntersingeneralbuttheplussideformeistheyhave
offeredupanotherawesomehuntingopportunity.Theycanhowever
playhavoconlocalizeddeernumbers.FromwhatIcangatherthe
biggerEasternyotemaytakemorebiggamemoreoftenthantheir
Westerncousins.

Notwithstandingmyslightsoftspotforthemandtheirnichespotthey
havefilledintheeasternwoods,Idobelievetheirnumbersneedtobe
managedaggressively.Huntersandtrappersneedtokeepthepressure
onthem.

Thisbolderbiggereasterncoywolfisnotwinningmanyfanswiththe
nonhuntingpopulationeither.Fromrunningoffwithhouseholdpets
allthewayupto(andeverythinginbetween)havingactually
attackedhumansandinonewelldocumentedcasekillingalonehiker
inmyhomeProvinceofNovaScotia.

Callinginbigpredatorsfromthegroundisexcitingstuff.Havinga
bigcoyoteruninatyourdistresscallwillgetyourhuntersheart
tickingIcanassureyou!

Ithinkthemostconsistentlysuccessfulcallswouldhavetobea
remotecontrolledEcaller.Withtheremotefunctionahuntercan
havetheincomingcoyotesattentionfocussedotherthanonhimor
her.TheonesIhaveusedsoundrealistic,thevolumecanbe
controlled,theycanbeoperatedwithjustthepushofabutton,andon
manymodelsyoucanplayoneormorecallatthesametime.

Ifyoucombineoneofthesecallswithadistractiondecoyyourodds
ofbeingspottedbyasharpeyedyotewillincreaseoverusinga

mouthblowncall.Amouthblowncallwillhavethecoyotefocussed
directlyonyourlocation.Ofcourse,thiscanbeovercomebyhunting
withapartnersetupashortdistanceawayfromthecaller.

NotwithstandingtheaboveIlovehuntingcoyotesusingamouth
blowncallandusingmyBlackWidowrecurvebow.Itdoesntaddup
tomanycoyotesonthegroundbutitsexcitingasanyhuntandwhen
itdoesallcometogetheramoreexhilaratingexperiencecanbehard
toduplicatefordifficultyandsenseofpride.

Oneparticularbearseasonhadmyhuntersalltaggedoutbymidweek
withrespectablebruins.Thegrouphadtravelledbycartomyhunting
campsoafterthepaperworkandsampleteethhadbeenturnedinto
theDNRtheywerepackingupandheadinghomeby10a.m.
Thursdaymorning.Thisleftmeatbearcampwithafewbaitsthat
hadntbeenhuntedyetthatyearandabeartagwithmynameonit
burningaholeinmypocket.

AfterthefinalhandshakesandfarewellsitwasntlongbeforeIwas
grindingupanoldrutfilledloggingroadtocheckadistantbearbait
thathadbeengettingpoundedonadailybasisforabout4weeksbut
hadyettohaveahuntersitoverit.

RoundingacornerIsawacouplecoyotesdartacrosstheoldlogging
roadabout200yardsaheadofme.Idoublecheckedmybackpack
andsureenoughIhadarabbitindistressmouthblowncallinmy
pack.InoteditwasonlyaboutnoontimesoIhadplentyoftime
beforeIneededtobeonthebearstand.

WithnothingtoloseIgrabbedmycallandrecurveandsnuckupthe
trailandclosedthedistancetoabouthalfwaytowherethecoyotes
hadcrossed.Itiptoedoffthetrailforperhaps40yardsandsnugged

uptightagainsttherootballofabigblowndownspruceandgavemy
firstseriesofcalls.Iwailedonthatcallandtriedtoimitatearabbitin
aworldofhurt.Iendeditwithaseriesoflowsquealsasiftherabbit
wastakinghislastbreath.

IbarleyhadtimetoputdownthecallandgrabthebowwhenIheard
severalanimalscominginfastfromdirectlybehindme.Itsan
awesomefeelingbutitdoesmakeyouwishforeyesinthebackof
yourheadIcantellyouthat!

Ithappenedsofastitwasalmostasiftherabbitsquealswerestill
echoingthroughtheforestwhentheanimalswerecomingin.In
seconds4coyotespassedbymewithineasybowrange.Twoonmy
leftandtwoonmyright.Theypassedwithin25yardsbutstopped
justshyof20yardsinfrontofme.Onedogwasmuchlargerthanthe
othersoallmyattentionimmediatelyfocusedonhim.Thebiggest
coyoteIwaswatchingactuallystoppedandsatdown.Heandthe
otherswerealllookingstraightahead.Nodoubtlookingforanysign
ofthedyingrabbitwhichwasperfectforme.

Irolledquicklyonmykneesanddrewonthebigboy.Ipickedaspot
andsentoffonecedarairmailspecial.Uponimpactthecoyoterolled
overbutquicklyregainedhisfeetandtookoffinablur.Itriedto
followhimbutIonlycaughtaglimpseofhimhereandtherebetween
thetreesbeforehedisappearedaltogether.

Ithoughttheshotlookedgoodbutdecidedtositstillfor30minutes
orso.WhenItookupthetrailIfounddropsofbloodwithinyardsof
wherehehadbeensittingwhenIshot.

Ifollowedthetrailforwelloverahundredyards.Thebloodwasnt
heavybutIwasabletofollowitwithoutresortingtohandsandknees.
Itwouldbebestdescribedaslightbutsteady.

AswithmostwellplacedbroadheadsIfoundthecoyoteattheendof
thetrail.Ihadjusttrackedthroughasprucethicketandcameoutinto
anopenhardwoodwhenIspottedthedownedcoyote.Isatand
watchedforafewminutestoensurehewasdownforkeeps.The
coyotewasdone.Henevermoved.

Iapproachedthebigmalecoyoteandestimatedhisweightataround
50pounds.Hisearlyfallcoatwasclosetoprime.Hewasthe
perfectlyevolvedpredatorforthispartoftheworld.Icouldnthelp
buthavetheutmostofrespectfortheanimalthatlayatmyfeet.

Howmanydeerkillshadhebeenapartof?Howmuchsmallgame
hadhetaken?Howmanypupscarryhisgenesthroughthesewoods?

Onesmallcoginnaturesperfectlybalancedwheelhadmetanother
cogthisautumnmorning.Thistimehoweverthecoyotelosttheflip
ofthecoin.MotherNatureplaysnofavourites.Inherdomainthere
arenorightorwrongdecisions.Thereareonlyconsequences.
Perfectlysimple.Perfectlycomplicated.Perfectlyperfect..
