Reflection: Module 2- Important Topic

After Reading chapters four, five, and six and competency three, four and eight, the
important topic which stood out throughout, was planning. A few areas captured my attention:
the planning time, competency 3-Designing Instruction Based on Goals and the teachers use of
time. These three go hand in hand when trying to be an effective teacher.
By planning your lesson, you take into consideration the content of what you are
teaching. Teaching content includes school and district policies, as well as state and district
guidelines, standards and test (Learning & Teaching by Don Kauchak/Paul Eggen). By
understanding the content that is being taught will affect the planning process. If you are
unfamiliar with the subject, planning allows you time to study the topic. By studying you can
ensure that you fully comprehend the lesson. A teacher who is unfamiliar with the lesson content
tends to ask lower-level questions. The teachers discourage students from asking question
because they are not confident in their knowledge to give an appropriate response. A person
cannot teach what they do not know, the same applies to teachers.
There is so much that goes into teacher planning. A teacher has to take into account their
own knowledge of the lesson and know how they want to teach this lesson. They have to think
about their students. How do the students learn best? They have to think of the materials and
resources they are going to need in order to successfully reach each student. They have to think
about how much time they want to spend on the lesson. They have to be sure the lesson fits into
what is expected of her/him as a teacher. What essential skills will the students need? One last
thing the teacher must think of when planning is how to actively involve students in learning.

Reflection: Module 2

When planning your lesson whether it be daily, weekly, monthly or for the year, a teacher
should take into consideration Competency three-Designing Instruction Based on Goals (C3).
Competency three suggests that teachers should perform a task analysis for each lesson to
determine necessary prerequisite skills and appropriate level of difficulty. Planning your lesson
permits you to work in Competency three. Comprehending your lesson also allows you to
facilitate higher order thinking, which is also suggested in C3.
Finally, I never gave much thought to time. According to chapter four in Learning &
Teaching by Don Kauchak/Paul Eggen, time will exert a powerful effect on your planning. You
have three types of planning: Individual lesson plans-prepares for a specific class period, longterm planning-a teachers first attempts to place planning decisions within a time frame with a
lists of topics and notes and unit planning-bridging the gap between long-term and lesson
planning. Time can either consume you or serve as a frame of reference. Beginning teachers are
the ones who may feel consumed; as they spend countless hours preparing for a lesson and then
lose time when in the actual classroom.
In order to be an effective teacher, the teacher has to carefully plan each lesson. They
must start off with the long-term planning goals. Once the long-term goals are in place, they can
start planning the unit lessons. The unit lessons usually entail a series of individual lesson plans
with a common goal and theme. Once a teacher has put together her lesson plans, the teacher has
to be sure she has allotted for the appropriate time into a classroom setting giving her the
opportunity to effectively instruct the students while keeping them actively involved.
