Potential Genres
In project 3, my community I am trying to reach would be
uncertain college students. I would like to encourage them to consider
majoring in marine biology so they may learn more about sharks and
find ways to protect them. Of those in marine biology already, I would
like to encourage a focus on sharks in the future.
One genre I would like to work in is the narrative genre. I would
like to personify the shark and tell a story from its perspective. If
people see it as 76 million people being murdered per year instead of
sharks, it may help them understand and want to become more active.
I plan on recording this and making it somewhat of a short audio story
or a podcast. I do not plan on revealing that the point of view is from a
shark until the end of the audio. Hearing it may be more effective than
reading because then there is a voice associated with the story. It is
not just text. It is related to real people.
Another genre I would like to use is the informal informative
genre combined with the narrative genre. I plan on making a short
comic that explains the horrors of shark finning in a medium that is
applicable to some other college students. I have not yet decided
exactly the content of the comic, but am considering making a comic
to illustrate the audio. This may work to enhance the narrative, as
there is now a visual aid. Another thought is to just further explain the
horrors of finning through images. Because there are images
associated with this topic, it may be more effective and drive people
through pathos.
My final genre I would like to use is the persuasive genre. Making
a flyer and hanging it around campus may encourage students to
consider marine biology. It is available to a wide variety of student.
Freshmen in the exploratory major could see this and consider
majoring in marine biology. Graduate students could see this and focus
in something relating to sharks in marine biology. A flyer is easily
accessible and can be seen by anyone walking past. With a good
design, a flyer may stop almost anyone.
