Professional Development Plan

According to the competency-based orientation (CBO), my


development plan will be an ongoing progress over a time span of two years.
My experience and knowledge as a Nurse Educator stems from working as a
nurse in the emergency room and presenting new nurses and new
graduates. I was expose to the CBO tool when I initially hired at University
Texas of Medical Branch of Galveston (UTMB). I orientated with an expert
nurse. My manager gave me a CBO specific for an emergency nurse as a
guideline for orientation. The results of the UTMB CBO for basic
Competencies: Clinical Educator indicates that I have some experience, but
not enough to be competent. My short-term goal is completing the first
semester 2015. My long-term goal is graduate from the UTMB nurse
educator program by fall of 2017.
I will list my required performance criteria to become a competent
clinical nurse educator. The learning needs and goal based on the CBO
assessment will be continuous throughout the two-year master program. I
have listed below my weaknesses:
Goals, Action Plan, Timeline and Evaluation

I have observed the process of utilize assessment data from the


director of emergency on how to provide learning opportunities to

meet educational needs of staff. I do not feel competent about the
process to develop and implements needs assessment for unit staff,
educational plan with revisions, learning activities based on needs of
assessment, prioritize needs and goals, and serve as a resource for
information about educational offerings. My action plan to meet this
goal by participating in this in these performance criteria by continuing
to learn in class and become competent when I start clinical. I will also
meet this goal when I work beside a faculty member. I will request to
help the nurse educator at my current job with the same
responsibilities listed. My timeline to this goal is 12-01-2015. I plan to
meet with my guidance tutor to evaluate my progress.

I have little experience in facilitating the orientation process for new


employees and transfers. I will learn to be more competent by
participating in assessment of orientee's competence, review selfassessment, and nursing service orientation by working with the nurse
educator at my current job. I can be competent by volunteering to be
a preceptor for the new graduate nurses hired by Maxim. I will
achieve this goal by participating when I am working with a nurse
educator at my clinical rotation to meet the following performance
criteria: develop action plan to meet performance criteria, meet with
orientee and preceptor to delineate action plan. I will learn to assist
and support preceptor to complete biweekly preceptor feedback tool,
monitor progress of orientee and mentor. I will learn to follow up on

action plan for focused assessment by SDS of incumbent staff. I will
meet this goal by participating more as a preceptor at work and help
plan a curriculum similar to UTMB CBO that is specific to a homecare
nurse. The time line to meet these goals is 5-1-15. I plan to meet with
my guidance tutor to evaluate my progress.

I have little experience in promoting educational program to assigned


staff. I plan to learn to write objectives and lesson plan. I will learn to
utilize adult learning theories, demonstrate effective presentation
skills: present material, use clear visual aid, allows and answer
questions. I will learn to encourage class participation, speak in a
loud, clear voice, offer variety of educational activities to meet inservice needs, and use AB/equipment effectively. I will meet the listed
performances by shadowing and helping with the nurse educator's
responsibilities at my current job. My time line of completing is 7-115. I plan to meet with my guidance tutor for evaluation of my
progress.

I have little experience in evaluating education programs. My only


exposure is listening to a peer who is a current nurse educator talk
about the tasks when she worked in her hospital. In order to be
competent in the following skills, plan to request to volunteer in her
hospital and work along with her will to maintain documents,
attendance roster, objectives, lesson plan, outline, and evaluations.

This will help me learn to develop and utilize evaluation tool for each
educational activity. In addition, I could learn to provide feedback to
speakers and nurse manager about evaluations. This plan will help me
learn to evaluate and revise education program based on participant
feedback. I plan to learn how to evaluate learning through a variety of
methods: observation on a clinical unit, performance evaluations,
quality improvement data, risk management, chart audits, and patient
satisfaction survey. I will meet this goal by continuing to learn and do
assigned assignments in my class. My time line to meet this goal is
12-1-16. I will meet with my guidance tutor to review my development
plan.

I have participated in continuous quality improvement and risk


management meeting. I will learn performance criteria by working
with a clinical nurse educator at a clinical setting hospital. This step
will strengthen the following skills: collaborate with other educators in
planning programs, participate in nursing service activities, stay
current with national specialty regulatory standards, and keep staff
abreast of trends and changes. When I continue with my learning in
my classes, I will learn to research findings from literature in practice
and actively participate on committees affecting patient care. I will
self-regulatory learning to continue my own education in my jobrelated knowledge and skills. I will learn to share information at
conferences and in-service with staff at my current job. My time line

to meet this goal is 1-1-16. I plan to meet with my guidance tutor to
evaluate my progress.
Networking and Professional Liaisons
As a future nurse educator at UTMB, I understand that staying current with nurse
education, networking and profession liaison is important. My goal is to continue to network
with other nurse educator and be a member of a professional nursing organization.

Action plan

I will attend a professional nurse organization seminar on


current trend of teaching nursing once a year.

I plan to join Texas Nurse Association (TNA) and National


League for Nursing (NLN). TNA mission is to promote
excellence in nursing through leadership, advocacy, and
innovation.

NLN mission is to promote excellence in nursing education


and associate members. I plan to meet this goal 12-1-2017

Education Leadership Goals


My goals for teaching is to be a graduate of the Nurse Educator MSN
program. I will use my self-assessment of the CBO tool become faculty. I will
utilize different styles of teaching and learning to provide a positive learning
environment that is conducive to my students. I will gear my teaching based

on student style of learning: auditory, visual, or tactile. I plan to provide
individual time during office hours to be a mentor and guide. I uphold my
qualities of a caring teacher: compassionate, understanding, supportive, and
resourceful. I will plan to meet this goal by 12-1-2017.
Action Plan

I plan to pursue in advancing my education by being pro-active


in current learning styles and to formulate strategies in a
classroom environment by participating in learning principles
that will encourage critical thinking for student nurses.

I will take active role in being in charge of nurse educator


workshop that will provide nurse education enhancement.

I plan to formulate different styles and seek ways to make my


class more interest and captivate my students.

I will start my doctorate degree Spring 2018. I will be active in


leadership with faculty in regards to improving the nursing
curriculum. I plan to write articles on evidence-based research
and current teaching methods for articles.

Citizenship Goals
Developing citizenship is important in developing growth for a nurse educator. I have set
goals to be an outreach for my students and community.

During my employment with UTMB, I plan to participate in faculty organizations that


involve current education plan.

I will be an advocate and address change if the curriculum needs improvement. UTMB
heath care plan outreaches into the community.

I will participate in organizing a blood drive, securing donations for needy patients, and
housing for patient's family at the Ronald McDonald's house.

I plan to help provide nursing care at the UTMB free medical clinics.

Scholarship Goal
Scholarship involves discovery, teaching, application and integration. Every year, UTMB
School of nursing sponsor a mission group to Lima, Peru. A group of UTMB doctors,
pharmacist, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, ophthalmologist, medical students, and
nursing students go on a mission trip. The group sets up a free medical clinic for four days at a
local Baptist Church to provide patient care.
Plan of Action

I will be the leader in organizing the yearly mission trip to Lima, Peru.

I will be the leader in organizing the yearly mission to Corpus Christy,


Texas.

I will be the leader in organizing free medical care in poverty areas of


Galveston and Houston areas.

The Professional Development plan follows me as a graduate student from


beginning to graduation. It will be continuous updated as I complete each
semester. It will help me build my portfolio. I believe that setting specific

goals, carrying out the plan of action, achieving my timeline, and evaluating
my progress will shape me into a successful nursing educator.
