Client proposal
The travel company GAP Travel have requested me to design, develop
and publish a suitable interactive media product, which will be in the form
of a CD-ROM entitled Things to do before youre 30. The CD-ROM will
display their services to people who want to travel and experience
something new. These experiences can include: places to see around the
world and adventures to have. The target audience for the interactive
media product is both male and females with an age range of 16 to 30. I
will make an initial list of 30 ideas, but I will only publish the best 15 of
these ideas that will be included in the CD-ROM. I will also need to create
a logo for GAP Travel that will be displayed on the interactive media
product. Creative methods such as: storyboards, scripts and simple mindmapping/ brain-storming. Storyboards will be used for a possible splash
page, two individual sample pages and a contents page. The client has
also requested a close button, so that the user can easily close the
application when they wish.
GAP Travel have highlighted the minimum requirements of the product
that I will produce for them. The company want the CD to appeal to Men
and women between the ages of 16 and 30. They want the product to
include basic features such as:

Text
Sound
Video
Navigation

The finished interactive media product must reflect GAP Travels standard
of professionalism and respectability as this will have a direct impact on
their market reputation. The company have granted me creative control
over the font of the text, colour scheme and the general look of the
product.
The format of the product will be a projector file in Director. This will then
be transferred over to a CD-ROM for GAP Travel to distribute to their
customers.
Advanced features

Type of production
I will be creating an interactive media product.

The target audience

The target audience for my interactive media product that I will be
developing for GAP Travel, is both males and females, between the ages
of 16 to 30 years old. GAP Travel have stated that the name of the product
is going to be Things to do before youre 30. Therefore, it would not be
necessary to have the target audience age of people over 30.

Market research
Before I begin developing my interactive media product, market research
is required so that I can see what ideas similar websites have generated.
Market research allows me to use websites that have similar content to
my interactive media product, and see aspects that I think are good. I
could then take some features from the websites and adapt them to suit
my application. On the other hand, market research lets me look at the
competition and the products that are already available, so that I can

Julian Thompson

make my application more unique and original. I will also take note of
what doesnt work so well with the websites that I will be researching so
that I could change different characteristics and maybe improve them for
my application. This will help me make a successful application and please
my client.
Below are a list of websites that I have researched that are similar to my
interactive media product: Things to do before youre 30, and are two
websites that are promoting activities that I am interested in including on
my product.

Contents
GAP Travel wants the interactive media product to persuade customers to
book the activities that they promote, with the company. The contents of
the product should be kept professional, so that GAP Travel maintains their
reputation with customers as a genuine and trust worthy business. The
target age range of the product should be considered when designing the
contents of the product. This is so that people between the ages of 16 and
30 find that the product is relevant to them and that it is useful to the
target audience. Graphics, details and a brief description of what each
activity is about should be included in the product. Images and graphics
gives the customer a feel of the activity, because the contents of the
product is not all text, images/graphics and animations keeps the
customers engaged and interested in the product.

Layout
The layout of my interactive media product is important because it needs
to look professional and unique from other competitors that are selling the
same product, so that customers are immediately interested in it and
want to book activities with the company (GAP Travel). I will need to plan
the layout of my product by sketching rough designs and using
storyboards. My layout will have to be consist throughout my product to
ensure that my product looks professional. I would have to ensure that the
client agrees and is happy with the layout of the product so that they are
fully aware of what the finished product will look like. I would like the
layout to contain enough information and detail so that the customer is
aware of what each activity is about. However, I would like a fair amount
of images and videos so that the layout is not just text. If there was too
much text and information in one place, this can make the product seem
boring and can make the customer lose interest.
Below are 2 main layouts I have chosen that best suits my product. The
client will decide which one they prefer. These layouts are originally built

Julian Thompson

for a website, but contain the basic needs for an interactive media
product, which I will be creating. I will edit them to suit my interactive
product.

In my opinion, I prefer the second layout design as it has pictures on the

splash page (or the homepage). The reason for this is that if the splash
page was to be filled with text, the customer might get the immediate
impression that the product is going to be boring, and all other pages will

Julian Thompson

also be filled with text. I want my product to immediate engage the

customer instead of bore them, so that they are interested in my product
and want to book activities with the company.

Graphics and background

Apart from the logo, I will avoid vector graphics and computer generated
images. This is because I feel vector graphics are do not look professional
to use throughout the product. For this reason, I will mainly use
photographs of landscapes and scenery as the background as I think that
this is suitable for a company promoting travel and exciting activities.
Also, I think that is visually appealing and attractive to have as a
background.
Below are some examples of backgrounds that could be used on my
interactive media product. If I was to choose which background I would
prefer to use for the product, I would say that that last image is the best
(The beach with a pier), as I think it is an interesting and colourful
background. Also, it is an appropriate background for a company looking
to promote and sell exotic destinations to visit, and activities to do.

Visual style and aesthetic qualities

I would like my interactive media product to look simple and modern. The
reason for this is because the target age range for my product are 16 to
30 year olds. These people are born into the modern era and have grown
up with technology that is ever advancing. If I was to opt for an old,
historic feel to the product, I do not think that the target audience would
find it aesthetically pleasing. Also, because my product is aimed at both
males and females, I need to keep the colour scheme suitable for both
genders. I would like to have the colour scheme as deep blues, oranges or

Julian Thompson

reds as I think these colours are visually appealing. The font of the text is
important, as it needs to be easy to read and not too small. I will probably
chose a standard font such as Arial or Times New Roman. The size of
the font will differ, depending on what the text is being used for. For
example, if I am writing a description for an activity, then the text will be
about 16 or 18. However, for the Logo, the font size for GAP TRAVEL
will be much larger, as I want it to stand out.

Format
The final product will be published as an interactive media product, in the
form of a CD-ROM. As it is a CD-ROM, the file size needs to be kept
relatively small as the average CD-ROM only allows up to a
maximum of 500MB of data that can be stored at a time. It
will be saved as a Projector file in director and named
"Things to do before you're 30".

Assets
Both primary and secondary assets will be used in the
development of the product. Photographs will likely be all
secondary assets as I am unable to photograph each activity
in action. Most photographs will be sourced from the Internet,
with the copyright laws taken in consideration. Videos will likely be a
secondary source from the internet. However, text and animations will all
be primary assets that I have produced myself. Audio clips could be either
primary or secondary, depending on what the purpose of them will be. If
included in a video, I might include music which I could upload. Or, record
my own audio and noises. The logo I will make myself as GAP Travel is an
original company and will be highly unlikely to be found anywhere on the
internet. Images that I might include in the logo could be found on the
internet however, such as a plane or a globe.

Multimedia Elements
The product will be made up of various multimedia elements such as:
videos, sounds and animation. The client has demanded that at least 2
videos are included in the interactive media product. The videos must
help promote activities that GAP Travel are selling to customers. As
previously mentioned, I will be creating my own animation as a
multimedia element to help promote GAP Travel activities. Animations can
be easily made in applications such as Flash. I could produce a stop
motion animation, whereby a series of pictures are taken to portray an
event. However, I do not think this is professional and therefore, I am
unlikely to use this in my product. A combination of text and images will
be used the GAP Travel logo. My initial idea is to have the words GAP
Travel written across a picture of a globe. This will be discussed with the
client to see if they agree with my ideas.

Julian Thompson

With this in mind, I still want to keep my product looking professional and
reflective of GAP Travel's qualities.

Logo
My initial idea for a logo is to have the words GAP Travel written across a
vector graphic of a globe. The globe will be blue and have the outlines of
all the continents and countries. The writing could be orange so that it
stands out and is the first thing the customer notices when on the CDROM. I would like to make sure that the logo is in collaboration with the
overall colour scheme of the product so that the logo does not look out of
place.
My second idea is to have GAP Travel written across a surfboard. This
reflects the experiences and activities GAP Travel offers to customers. The
surfboard will be a range of different colours and will have an exotic feel to
it. The words GAP Travel could look inscribed into the surfboard, which will
make it look like it actually says GAP Travel. Or, the text could stand out in
a large font and bold colours. I have come up with a range of different
fonts and colours that could be used for the logo that can be seen below. I
have also created my own prototype logos that are displayed below. I am
unlikely to use the logo designs seen below as they are just rough ideas of
what I want the final product to be like. Out of the 3 designs for the logo, I
prefer the second one that has GAP TRAVEL written across the globe. I
feel this represents the idea behind Gap Travel (Travelling the world and
experiencing different activities).
