Multi-Camera Production Roles


You will be producing 3-4 interviews during your chat show. For each interview state who will be doing
which role. You must do EVERY role once during the show.

TASK 1: Define each of the following roles
Interviewer
Describe their job Reference your research
The job of the interviewer is to question a person about a certain topic that theyve experienced
or are a part of, so that anyone viewing the interview will know more about the subject. The
job is for the interviewee to give their expertise to others.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
They work in the studio floor, on stage in front of the camera. Or they can do on location
interviews where they will travel out of the studio to a suited location for the interview.
What skills do they need to do their job well?
They need to be talkative, quick thinking, kind and sympathetic. They need basic knowledge of
the topic to explain and elaborate on, along with having clear dictation so that they are easily
understood.

Director
Describe their job - Reference your research
The director is in charge of the whole production, he gives all the stage orders along with all the
lighting, camera crew orders and roles of the studio. He explains to everyone what they
should be doing along with being in charge of the recording itself.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
They work in the control room, or on the stage floor behind the stage.
Stage The stage so that they can see clearly all of whats going on, on screen.
Control room to control lighting, sound etc.

What skills do they need to do their job well?


They need to be respectful, orderly and organised. Kind and be good at concentrating along
with obviously being creative.

Camera Person
Describe their job - Reference your research
The job of a camera man is to hold the camera and essentially record the clips that they are
told to record. They are in charge of their individual camera and filming along with the sound
of the area they are recording.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
They work on set, they will be on the studio floor and in the control room. If its a multi camera
production they will be controlling which camera in the control room.

What skills do they need to do their job well?


They need to have a steady hand, a wide knowledge of camera and camera work. Along with
knowing all rules of the camera and knowledge of terms used.

Sound Mixing
Describe their job - Reference your research
The sound mixers are in charge of editing the sound completely, the individual actors and actresss
speaking or whoever is on camera. Along with the title music and the credits music. They will be in
charge of all sound effects and the transitions between scenes.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
They will work in the control room where they have all the technology and silence that they need in
order to concentrate and pick up on every single sound in order to edit and tweak it.

They need good knowledge of sound equipment and editing. They need to have a good ear for what
sounds good

Vision Mixing
Describe their job - Reference your research
Vision mixers are in charge of the cameras. They chose and direct the camera positions and if its a
multi camera production, they will chose which camera is being used at each individual time.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
They work in the control room where they can easily see and chose which camera to use. They do
this by looking through the camera thats currently being used and deciding whether a different
angle would be better.

What skills do they need to do their job well?


They need to have a good sense of perspective and visual design. They must understand the
relation between camera and whoever is in front of it. Meaning that the camera position and angle
should reflect the emotions of the characters, or the seriousness of the topic. They must have an
eye for detail and know what the audience will want to see.

Graphics Generator
Describe their job - Reference your research

The graphics generator will be in charge of any animation, they will edit in anything that needs to be
added such as a background or a monster etc.

They work in the control room where they can use software and a green screen perhaps to do this.

What skills do they need to do their job well?

They need to have very wide knowledge of the software that they are using, along with advanced
knowledge of sound and lighting.

Lighting Desk
Describe their job - Reference your research
Lighting crew members are in charge of the on screen lighting they will chose how dark it is, how
light it is etc.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
They work in the control room where they can use the software that they need in order to change the
light source such as you would change the camera angle. And edit how bright it actually is.

What skills do they need to do their job well?


They need to have good knowledge of lighting, and understand the relation between emotion and
lighting in the production.

Floor Manager
Describe their job - Reference your research

Floor managers make sure that all sets, props and technical equipment are safe and ready to use.
Making sure that its in the right position before filming starts. They have to make sure that timings
are met and that the broadcast goes smoothly

They work in the studio floor where all the action and positions take place to make sure that it is
perfect before filming begins. They coordinate the roles and they are the link between the director
and the cast/crew.

What skills do they need to do their job well?


They need to be talkative, explanatory, coordinated, organised. Creative and kind.

checking that equipment, e.g. microphones and earpieces, are working before the show;

seating the audience (if in attendance);

referring to floor plans;

assisting guests on the show;

relaying instructions from the control room to the studio floor using a talkback system;

keeping the director and producer informed of action off-camera;

assisting in the planning and preparation of productions;

overseeing the work of other departments, such as sound, lighting and props;

rehearsing live shows;

giving cues and time counts to presenters, actors or guests;

organising runners to make the best use of studio time;

looking ahead in the programme schedule to anticipate any changes to the set, or to see
what props are required later in the show;

briefing and looking after those involved in the programme;

managing the audience, e.g. explaining safety requirements, show timings and what will
happen during filming and when the programme will be aired;

dealing with any technical problems;

controlling the studio and halting production if necessary;

liaising with public relations staff to agree who will be interviewed, for example at sports
matches;

passing information and progress reports from live events to studio presenters;

adhering to health and safety regulations, e.g. keeping 'safe areas' and fire exits clear of
equipment.

Set Design
Draw a plan of your set. Mark on the position of lights, cameras, props and Green-screen
backgrounds.
Add in photographs of your final set, including props etc.

Lighting Design
Take photographs of the lighting set up for the following sections of your show;
a) The presenter introducing the show
b) Interviews (the lighting may be different for different interviews)
c) The end of the show
Stick the photographs in and add notes explaining the setup.

Lighting:
The lighting will not change throughout the production, it has been pre-positioned so that the
shadows will not cast or effect any visuals or even be seen. The light perfectly illuminates all cast
members along with perfectly defining their features.
