Kayaking Three-Week Unit Outline and Unit Goals


Psychomotor Domain Unit Goals
1. TSW practice and demonstrate a variety of fundamental movements and skills associated with kayaking that will include:
paddle handling, balancing skills, arm movement, upper body skills, and arm work patters that are involved and are essential to the
lifetime adventure activity of kayaking.
2. TSW will actively participate in fitness activities associated with kayaking or that will enhance their level of fitness that
targets the fitness components utilized in the lifetime activity of kayaking; specifically the cardiovascular system, muscular strength
and endurance, and the anaerobic energy system.
Cognitive Domain Unit Goals
1. TSW apply specific skills when strategically appropriate during the course of kayaking.
2. TSW synthesize information related to kayaking that will include historical facts and rules and create a concept map for
kayaking.
Affective Domain Unit Goals
1. TSW value kayaking and the skills associated with kayaking as a lifetime activity that can be enjoyed individually, small or
large groups, during any day of the year as a quality, fun, and challenging physical activity.
2. TSW appreciate the individual, teamwork, or physical work that it takes to become a quality kayaker and hopefully be
motivated to continue wanting to practice and join in any kayaking related activities.

THREE WEEK UNIT OUTLINE FOCUSED ON SKILL BUILDING PORTION OF DAILY LESSON
WEEK

MONDAY

FITNESS: Jumping jacks,


push-ups, up and downs

SKILL: -introduce early history of


kayaking and major history events.
-introduce stationary paddling skills
while sitting on a bench and
alternating hands. Students will focus
on eye-hand coordination.

SKILL: review kayaking


skills
-introduce scooters to
students and have them hold
a paddle while on scooter

APPLICATION: Mass group.


Individual sit on a bench and practice
paddling on different sides of bench.

FITNESS: Jump Rope, push-ups


intervals
SKILL: Review previously learned
skills and introduce the importance of
the draw stroke.
APPLICATION: students will
practice the draw stroke while on
scooter and will move from point A to
point B.

TUESDAY

FITNESS: Muscular endurance,


quickness.

FITNESS: Motivational Run Around


the lake. Upper body stretches to
prevent injury.
SKILL: Review the front and back
power strokes
APPLICATION: Students will get on
kayak and follow me around the lake

APPLICATION: each person


will sit on a scooter and use
the rubber end of paddle to
push off the ground and begin
paddling so they can move
while sitting on scooter.

WEDNESDAY

THURSDAY

FRIDAY

FITNESS: Run in place,


back pedaling from point A to
point B (points will be
marked), run from point A to
point B while holding paddle
appropriately.

FITNESS: Ball tag ( walking,


jogging, running) *if student
gets tagged, student will
perform 10 jumping jacks and
join game
SKILL: review the previous
lesson learned. Introduce
back power stroke.

FITNESS: muscular
endurance task sheets on
walls.
SKILL: review the previous
lessons learned. Quick practice
session on front and back
power stroke.

SKILL: review previous


lessons learned. Introduce
front power stroke proper.

FITNESS: Dribble Tag with


reentry fitness tasks
SKILL: review the draw
stroke. Introduce cross draw
stroke and proper techniques
to facilitate movement.
APPLICATION: groups of 2
and have one student push
the other student through
obstacles and when closing
on an obstacle, student will
use cross draw stroke to
maneuver around obstacle.

APPLICATION: Students will


sit on scooter and practice
their front power stroke while
moving from point A to point
B and trying to maintain a
straight line.
FITNESS: rolling dice with a
task sheet
SKILL: Review previously
learned. Introduce pry stroke
and explain the importance of
this stroke.
APPLICATION: Students will
sit on scooter with paddle on
their hands. Torso will be
turned to working side and
will begin paddling short
choppy strokes, prying away
from scooter.

FITNESS: Ultimate Frisbee.


SKILL: Review draw stroke
and cross draw stroke.
APPLICATION: students will
mount kayak and begin
practicing the cross draw
stroke and draw stroke.

FITNESS: 3-0N-3 3 MINUTE


GAME(basketball)
SKILL: Review Pry and
duffec stroke.
APPLICATION: Students will
mount kayak and practice the
pry and duffec stroke.

APPLICATION: Students will


sit on scooter and practice
their back power stroke while
moving from point A to point
B and trying to maintain a
straight line.
FITNESS: Jump-Rope walkjog intervals
SKILL: review previously
learned skills and introduce
duffec stroke.
APPLICATION: groups of 2.
Students will sit on scooter
and have partner push them
down the gym slowyly. After
about 7 feet student on
scooter will turn blade at a 45
degree angle.

FITNESS: Modified football


game that will allow all
students to be involved in the
game.
SKILL: Review sweep stroke.
APPLICATION: Students will
mount kayak and practice the

the basketball court or walk
