Reflection on my first and second lesson:

I implemented the same lesson plan in two different classes. It took time to study the lesson
plan before going and presenting the lesson to students. I used the CELTA techniques and from
my own perspective, it was a great plan. Appendix A shows the lesson plan.
My first class ( 8:00 9:00 am):
I had ten students in my class and they were active in the morning. My plan went well except
for the last stage (production stage) as the time passed quickly and I couldnt give students time
to practice the language more. I received beneficial feedback from my mentor who observed
my lesson. One of the comments was that I had to break down instructions more, which means
give students one instruction at a time so that the students dont get lost. My mentor also
recommended that I write on the whiteboard if I would like to explain rules or any information.
So, I decided to implement my mentors feedback in the second class.
My second class (1:00 2:00 pm):
I had twenty-three students which was a large number of students compared to the first class.
They were exhausted and didnt want to have a lesson. I think that the reason was that they
were hungry and wanted to have a break. I could control the first class as the number was
smaller, but I figured out that this class needed much more control and classroom
management. Many students were not listening and wanted to have fun and chat in the class. I
took the courage to be serious and raised my voice a little bit so they would stop talking with
each other and listen. And that worked well. For some reason, students were not answering the
questions correctly which made me think that I had done something wrong or I had forgotten
to explain a stage. However, I realized that students couldnt focus because of the time of the
day (lunch time) and they preferred not to listen or complete tasks. I think I did all I could to
help the students answer the questions as I was going around and checking their work and
asking other students, who had correct answers, to assist them. I had to be serious in the
teaching stage, but in the last stage ( production stage) I used humor to chat with my students
as I wanted to make them smile and laugh at the end of the class.
