Impact in Literature and Life."

and Life. N.p., n.d. Web. 20

Patrick Curles shows what

Tolkien believed about his
writings and other mythology.
While others, even C.S.
Lewis, believed that myths
are just sugar coated lies,
Tolkien said no. Tolkien
believed that myths were full
of truth. These are truths that
men know exists, such as
truths of beauty and honor
that are immaterial but still
real. He believed that these
truths were always hidden
and only able to be seen
through mythology. He wrote
the Lord of the Rings to give
England her own myth. This
view of mythology gave
meaning to so many stories
afterwards that would have
just seemed like meaningless
stories otherwise.

This leads me to wonder

about some of the deep
truths within Tolkiens works
and its general formula plot
that influences other stories.
This led me to reading about
Harry Potter and Star Wars in
other sources.

This is Michael Halls thesis

paper written by a student at
Southern Illinois University
that goes into detail on how
Tolkien influenced pop

writings of fantasy such as

ses
Led Zepplin and metal music
to religion. It also tells how
after reading Tolkiens works,
readers have higher
expectations for future
stories. It also added to the
uprising during the 60s and
70s in the US against
government.

This is basically a big source

that connects every one of
my sources because it is
exactly what I am
researching. It also provides
other links.

What is the influence of

Tolkien on the fantasy genre
is a page that basically
connects Tolkiens work to the
work of many other fantasy
writers such as David
Eddings, Stephen R.

This leads me into more

research on how it is
connected to Harry Potter
and makes me realize even
more connection between
more books because of how
much Tolkiens works actually

also shows all the obvious
connections between Harry

noticeable ripoffs of the
LOTR such as The Sword of
Shannara. It also talks
about how Tolkien
dominates the fantasy genre
and there is almost nothing
that a new writer could do to
make a story both exciting
and also new. It tells how
with the Silmarillion
covering the Creation story,
god and goddesses, angels
and demons, and trying to
take down evil and The
Hobbit covering, young
powerless protagonist, fairy
tail like quest in medieval
times with mythical
creatures and the Lord of
the Rings covering literally
everything and a wise
wizard, there is really
nothing a new writer could
do without having a boring
story.

Tolkien has also affected art

like a giant sculpture of
something like the eye of
sauron in Norway. Tolkien
influenced Michael Everson
to creating unicode for most
languages. Tolkien also
helped in editing the oxford
english dictionary. It also
influenced the hippie time
period because they took it to
be little guys fighting the
power. Also metal music is
greatly influenced by Tolkien.

So this basically just told me

how many different things
Tolkien actually influenced
instead of just Literature. It
led me to research more
about languages he has
created and how that
changes the fantasy genre.

Galaxies and dinosaurs are

named after Tolkien or his
work. New-Zealand has
hobbit money and calls itself
middle earth. Dennys has a
menu of food from the hobbit.
George Lucas says Star
Wars was influenced by the
Lord of the rings.

Tolkien spent his childhood

making made up languages
with kids in his neighborhood.
He proceeded to write many
more languages as his life
went on such as elvish and
dwarvish that he used in his
novels. George Lucas was
influenced by his success
with this fantasy story into
creating star wars. There are
many things connecting star
wars and the LOTR.
Yoda=Gollum. The color of
lightsabers and the color of
swords. Obi-Wan=Gandalf.
Darth Vader=Witch King.
Emperor Palpatine=sauron

This source went in depth

about how The LOTR
connected to star wars
basically telling me that
Tolkien influenced almost
every good fiction book or
movie Ive seen in my life.

Tolkien was in a small literary

group known as the Inklings.
He had one really good friend
in the group named C.S.
Lewis. Tolkien and Lewis
were great friends and helped
each other with their works by
adding ideas and such things.
Tolkien even thought of Frodo
and Sam to be like him and
Lewis. Lewis also created his
own middle earth. Though
narnia wasnt meant to be
middle earth in any way, it
was similar to tolkien in that it
was this giant world of many
lands with different kingdoms
and full of mystical creatures
such as talking animals,
centaurs, and evil rulers.

So basically this again shows

another famous writer that
was pretty much creating his
own Lord of the Rings with
different characters. Tolkien
made it really difficult for
people to make their own
new stories.

Before Tolkien, the fantasy

genre was seen as just small
fairy tales. In Tolkiens works,
he added a great complexity
to it. He created entire
histories for the people in his
novels including trees of
families in kingdoms and
extensive languages. He
also drew maps of all his
kingdoms instead of relying
on memory to know where
things are. He also inspired
the creation of entire worlds
into writing. Without Tolkien,
we would have never seen
Hogwarts from Harry Potter.
But possible the most notable
thing he influenced was the
way of telling the story. He
went into so much intricate
detail in the way he worded
his stories.

This basically is just telling

again how awesome Tolkien
is and how some of his ways
of writing and using great
detail in his stories were seen
in future authors such as
Rowling and Lewis.

This source included quotes

from Rowling on the subject
of her possibly taking
Tolkiens ideas. According to
the authors, Rowling claims
to have never read Tolkiens
novels until after she had
written her books. She also
states that she doesnt
actually even like fantasy
novels and only wrote it on
accident.

This source helped to get

Rowlings side of the story to
introduce different
possibilities.

This is similar to one of my

other sources in that it gives
examples of things in Harry
Potter that are similar to
those in the Lord of the
Rings. I few of the things that
they compare are Galadriels
seeing bowl and the
pensieve, Eowyn and Ginny,
and the ringwraiths and
dementors.

This source was interesting

because it compared many
things that I hadnt ever
thought about comparing.
