Hedgehog

Central Focus:
The focus of this unit is to introduce the students to the combination of elements of art
in their art works and how to identify them. This will be done through the two
elements of art Color and Texture.
Lesson Rationale and Summary:
Rationale: In this lesson students on combining the two elements of art color and texture that
were covered in previous lesson. The purpose of this lesson is to introduce them to
understanding and using different elements of art and combinations of them art together in
their work.
Summary: Students will begin the lesson with a presentation reviewing texture and the fall
colors going over primary and secondary with the use of the colors Red Yellow and Orange. As
well as the definition of texture and talking about how things look and how they feel. We will
briefly talk about hedgehogs which is the animal that we are creating in this lesson. The
students will be show step by step how to create a hedgehog. Teacher demonstrating each step
along with the visual images. Then the students will create their own hedgehog with the
materials supplied. Once the students complete their hedgehog they will alert the teacher who
will instruct them on where to place their work. Then once the students are all finished they
will gather on the floor and watch a video book Leafy the Leaf That Would Not Leave , that
discusses the changing of the seasons. Then the students will return to their sets and follow the
instructions of the teacher. Each student will have a green piece of paper that they will use to
create their own leaf that would not leave. The teacher will lead the students in a drawing of
the leafs, showing them step by step how to create their own leaf, the students will follow
along. Then the students will cut their leaf out of the green paper and have their own Leafy.

Content Vocabulary:
Primary Colors: colors that are pure, you can not mix any colors to get these
colors
Secondary Colors: colors created from a combination for two primary colors
Elements of Art: The elements of art are the building blocks used by artists to
create a work of art.
General Vocabulary:
Color: the appearance of a thing apart from size and shape when light strikes it
Texture: the way things feel, or look as if they might feel if touched.
Combination: a joining or merging of different parts or qualities in which the
component elements are individually distinct
Fall/ Autumn:the third season of the year, when crops and fruits are gathered
and leaves fall, in the northern hemisphere from September to November and in the
southern hemisphere from March to May
Hedgehog: a small nocturnal Old World mammal with a spiny coat and short
legs, able to roll itself into a ball for defense
Instructional Terms:
Cut: remove (something) from something larger by using a sharp implement.
Draw: produce (a picture or diagram) by making lines and marks, especially
with a pen or pencil, on paper.
Mood: a temporary state of mind or feeling.
Expression: the process of making known one's thoughts or feelings. The look
on someone's face that conveys a particular emotion
Glue: an adhesive substance used for sticking objects or materials together.
Planned Assessment:
Pre Assessment: Students will test their knowledge of colors and the terms primary and
secondary, with a discussion lead by the teacher with a presentation.
Formative Assessment: Teacher will walk around the students working seeing who is
following the directions and who is using the materials correctly. Assisting students who need

Differentiated Instructional Strategies:
Class Discussions, this will help the learning of the intrapersonal learners and verbal learners.
Powerpoint, this instructional tool will assist the Visual and Verbal learners.
Teacher instruction/ lecture, this will help the auditory learners.
One on One Teacher discussions: this will help the interpersonal learners, as well as the
auditory/ verbal learners.
IEPs, depending on the student's individual IEP the student may receive research assistance
from peers, teacher and aids.

Teacher Demonstration these will assist the visual and kinesthetic learners.

Procedure: (four components)


i. Readiness/ Motivation for Lesson:
Allotted Time: 15 min
Students arrive ready to learn.
They will first take a set on the floor in front of the white board.
We will go through a presentation reviewing texture and the fall colors going
over primary and secondary
Pre Assessment: Students will test their knowledge of colors and the terms
primary and secondary, with a discussion lead by the teacher with a presentation.
Slide 2: What colors are associated with the fall season ? students will raise
their hand when called on name a fall color.
Slide 3: Red is what kind of color? Red is a primary color, teacher will have
the students repeat the term. What kind of color is Yellow? Yellow is also a primary
color. What happens when you mix red and yellow together?
Slide 4: You get orange. What kind of color is Orange? Orange is a secondary
color. The students will repeat this term.
Slide 5: What is Texture? Texture is how you think something will feel if you
touch something, assessed by looking at an object.
Slide 6: The Hedgehog. What sort of colors do we see? Who can describe the

texture of the hedgehog ?


Slide 7: Step by step. This slide has step by step images on how to create
their hedgehog. step one, get your hedgehog. step two write your name on the back
in the middle of the paper. Step three draw your hedgehog a face. Step four cut your
hedgehog out of the paper. Step five glue the leaves onto your hedgehog. Teacher
will demonstrate these steps as the images appear. Reviewing the saying just a dot
not a lot, in reference to glueing.
ii. Lesson Development:
Allotted Time: 25 min
Teacher will pass out the hedgehogs to quiet students
Students will follow the step by step directions to create their hedgehog.
Formative Assessment: Teacher will walk around the students working
seeing who is following the directions and who is using the materials correctly.
Assisting students who need assistance with their project As well as ask the students
about the work and the colors and textures of their work.
Once the students finish their hedgehogs they will put their thumb in the air
and sit quietly in their seat. The teacher will come over and check their work for
completion. If it is complete they will be instructed where to place their hedgehog to
dry.
iii. Lesson Closure:
Allotted Time: 10 min
Students will then have a set on the floor and watch a video book. Leafy the
Leaf that would not leave.
Students will then return to their seats and look up at the board for further
instructions.
Teacher will then instruct the students on the creation of their own Leafy.
Teacher will show them how to draw step by step, going slowly and allowing
for students to draw along with them.
Once the leaves are drawn the teacher will instruct the students to cut them
out.
Formative Assessment: Teacher will grade students according to the rubric
named Hedgehog Rubric (App 1).
