Lesson Focus: Shooting a Lay-Up

Modifications / Adaptations:
If someone cant dribble, pass, or shoot we will have the students
watch the video of how to shoot, pass, and dribble for a better
understanding.
If they cant do any of the tasks then we will make it easier by
moving them closer to the target, shooting at a lower hoop in the
gym, or dribbling with no defense.

with your right hand, on the way back switch to your left hand
and dribble back. Once you get half way, give a chest pass to the
next student in line. After going through this 2 times per student,
switch to a dribble move (crossover or around the back) at the
half court line.

Lay Up Students will break up into groups of 6 and go to the

Non-Dominate hand Layups might be challenging for most of the different baskets located around the gym. The students will do a
right-handed lay-up by dribbling up to the basket and bringing
students. If they cannot preform the non dominate hand layup,
their right knee up and right arm up with the ball in the hand. The
show the video preforming the non-dominate hand layup and go
over ques. If they still have trouble, have them use their dominant student will bounce the ball off the backboard into the hoop.
Switch after each student goes 2 times.
hand on the opposite side of the basket and then suggest coming
in for extra help with the non dominate hand.
Culminating Activity Timed lay up. In the group of 6 at each
basket, students will go back and fourth under the basket timing
each other for 20 seconds seeing how many layups they can
complete.
Assessment item: Always check for understanding.

Task Presentation/ Teaching Cues

Warm Up. Have the Students get into 4 lines of 6. The
students are going to do some of loco motor movement (skip,
gallop, run, lunge) to the half court line and back. This will
elevate their heart rate and get them familiar with the
basketball court.
Have the students stay in their 4 lines of 6 students on the
baseline. Make enough lines for the entire class. Distribute the
balls to the front of each line.
While they are in the lines on the baseline, show the different
skills like bounce pass, chest pass, a lay-up and dribble moves
via the overhead projector. Give ques like; string attaching
wrist and knee, use the backboard, pass to the chest. Eyes up,
loose wrist, finger tips for dribbling.
Dribble Down the Court: Dribble down to the other baseline
with your right hand, on the way back switch to your left hand
and dribble back. Once you get half way, give a chest pass to
the next student in line. After going through this 2 times per
student, switch to a dribble move (crossover or around the
back) at the half court line. REMEMBER: Loose wrist, finger
tips on the ball, eyes up
Once they are done There should be 4 lines of 6 students.
There are 4 basketball hoops throughout the gymnasium. Send
each line to a basket in the gym.
The students will do a right-handed lay-up by dribbling up to
the basket and bringing their right knee up and right arm up
with the ball in the hand. The student will bounce the ball off
the backboard into the hoop. Switch to the left side preforming
a left handed lay up after each student goes 2 times.
Everyone bring it in to the middle. And explain the game
timed lay up game. Tell the students they have to go back and
fourth using their dominant and non-dominate hand on each
side of the basket. Show them how to use a stopwatch, have
the students practice using the stopwatch by starting it and
stopping it. Check for understanding on how to use the
stopwatch. Send them to their basket that they used for the lay
up drill.
