Lesson Plan: Acts of Kindness

Overview:
This lesson will educate students on the importance of showing kindness; to
learn how to behave in certain situations, to evaluate themselves (in their daily lives),
their actions and the action of others around them. Students will also participate in
the class discussions to reflect their understanding and thoughts. Examples provided
visually will help them develop a better appreciation to what kindness is all about.
Lastly, I will have the students work on an activity sheet which will be counted
towards their participation grade.
Subject: ERC
Grade 4 / (Cycle 2)
Created by Miss Nelo
Objectives:

Date: October 21 2015

School:
Duration: ~ 50 minutes

Students will be able to do the following:

Define kindness
Generate examples and non-examples of kindness
Discuss and reflect on the different scenarios from the pictures involving acts of
kindness. Draw on personal experience of their own kind acts
Identify actions that help others feel welcome, cooperative, and cared for.
Become familiar with ways to show kindness toward others.
QEP competencies: C#1 Reflects on ethical questions
C#3 Engages in dialogue
Material:
Pay it Forward- Acts of kindness video (YouTube)
Smart board, PowerPoint slideshow, Activity handout, pencil and eraser
Introduction: ~5 minutes
Start the class with the video clip as the opening into our topic for todays ethics lesson
on Acts of kindness.
Remind students to pay close attention to the details shown in the clip and that
afterwards, I will be prompting them for questions.
Monitor the class to see if any students are distracted or talking while watching the clip,
go over to them quietly and tell them to stop what they are doing and focus.
Development Phrase: ~ 15-20 minutes
Ask students: What did you notice in the video? What was the main point? Was there
anything particular in the clip we just saw that stood out to you, and why ?

Elicit students responses and make sure to give everyone a chance to answer.

Ask students if they know what kindness means? To define it in their own words. Can
we use other words to describe acts of kindness? Possible suggestions we can have
are; being nice, friendly, generous, considerate, compassionate for others and etc

Can any of you provide examples of what can be considered an act of kindness? What

are some nice actions that you do on a daily basis?

Possible student answers: throwing away garbage, recycling, helping parents with
chores, cleaning, laundry, putting the chairs down in the classroom, helping a friend,
helping someone with homework or school work, helping an elder cross the street etc

Now, show a couple of picture examples of situations portraying random acts of

kindness, ask students what is happening in this scenario? Is this a good example that
demonstrates kindness or not? How can we change it so it becomes a positive action?

This should be stimulating and engaging students to think about the scenarios more
critically.
For other possible question which you may ask: What would you do if you were in their
shoes? Imagine yourself, what would you do differently to show your kindness in this
example, if needed? Any other suggestions?

Class Activity ~20 minutes

Present the activity handout students will be working on during this time.
As soon as its passed around, have a student read the instructions out loud.
Explain to them that this will have to be completed in class as I will be collecting the
papers in by the end of class time. To see who completed their work and will be counted
towards their participation grade.
They should work discretely on this activity, some may choose to work with their
neighbors and I will allow it if they can do so quietly.
Make sure to walk around the room to check if everyone is on task and knows what they
need to do.
Evaluation:
Students will be assessed on their participation and behavior in the class discussions
.
Their activity handout will be counted toward participation and understanding of the
concept. They will be evaluated on their activity sheet which will demonstrate they have
included a drawing showing an act of kindness and wrote a sentence about what it
means to them. I will be looking to see what terms students are using, such as nice,
compassionate, considerate, friendly, and so on) to describe kindness.
Differentiation:
Students with special needs in the classroom will participate along with other students in
the same discussion and activities.

I will provide more time for students to complete the activity handout. Even after class
time is over, they can spend additional time afterwards to finish, if needed.

I will circulate around the class and monitor those students that need the extra help.
Students who are weak can pair up with a stronger student to work.

Reflection:

I was given positive feedback from both my cooperative teacher and supervisor for this
lesson I created based on our cycle 2 initiative for ERC school movement.
I feel I may have spent a little too long with the powerpoint presentation and therefore,
students were given little time to work on their activity sheet. Some students were not
done so I gave the option to take it home and complete it for the following day.
As an extension to this lesson, I would give students different types of scenario to role
play in front of their peers
For example; you watch your friend accidently bump into person whose carrying books
and she ends up dropping them all over the floor. Your friend continues to walk without
looking back, what you do in this situation?
I would have the class witness it and discuss in their groups what each would have done
by commenting and suggesting the idea of kind actions.
