Memo

To: Hamline Students and Faculty

From: Adam Reichert, Nick Sova
Date: 10/18/15
Subject: Feasibility Proposal
The feasibility of Hamline getting a new gym
Purpose
This proposal requests permission to study the feasibility of getting a new gym or expanding
walker field houses gym. We will be writing a report with my recommendations on whether
Hamline University can expand or build a new gym.
Summary
Hamline University has 2,242 students and 476 of those students are student athletes who use the
gym alongside none athlete students (6). Hamline has 19 mens and womens athletic teams,
which all use the gym. We propose to research 1) the need for a new or expanded gym at
Hamline University; 2) Size of other area schools gyms; 3) estimated expense for building or
expanding a new gym; 4) The expenses for putting in new equipment in the expansion or newly
built gym.
From the research we have conducted and our previous knowledge in the field, we see there
being no problem conducting a feasibility study on this topic. We intend to complete this by the
required deadline of November 29, 2015.
Introduction
Hamline Walker Field house is currently 74,580 square feet (5), which is one of the smallest in
the MIAC. The Clarence Nelson fitness center which is in Walker Field house is only 4,000
square feet(5).
After conducting research of various other schools in the MIAC it is clear that Hamline has one
of the smallest Field Houses and gym areas offered to its students and student athletes.
St. Thomas is 180,000 square feet
Macalester is 175,000 square feet
St. Marys is 78,000 square feet
St. Olaf is 95,000 square feet
By the statistics provided of these four MIAC schools Hamline has the smallest field house,
which is in direct proportion to the size of the gym in that facility. Over the past few years we
have talked amongst our fellow student athletes and we can all agree that the gym area gets
overcrowded, and there isnt enough room to conduct proper gym workouts amongst our teams
and the other students.

Proposed Procedure
This part of our proposal outlines completed and future research along with the criteria and our
qualifications and credentials.
Completed Research: To date I have completed the following research to gain information for
my study.
Conducted research on other facilities in the MIAC
Have asked various students if they feel the need for a new or expansion of the existing
gym.
Future Research: The following is a detailed description of how I plan to complete my research
for the feasibility study.
Develop a survey to be handed out to the other class of Professor Sorias
Research other expansion projects at various schools
Research cost for new equipment.
Find what alumni have already donated to the existing field house..
Research possible areas for the expansion or new gym
Interview staff in the athletic department (If approved by you)
Criteria: At completion of my research I will make the following recommendations based upon
the following criteria.
Can the school financially afford a new gym?
Who would invest and where would Hamline get the money?
Is there interest from staff and students on campus for a new gym?
How big should the expansion or new gym be?
Qualifications and credentials
We both are current athletes here at Hamline University and have over 20 years of experience
playing sports and training for those sports. We also have each been to various gyms to train at
over our competitive sports careers. We know the background of our topic and have each
experienced the need to expand or build a new gym on campus.
Completion Schedule
1 Conduct a survey with questions pertaining to the issue 10/18
2 Interview various heads of the athletic departments (pending approval)
3 Conduct research of other schools 10/15
4 Write rough draft 11/15
5 Revise rough draft after grading and peer review 11/22
6 Write final draft 11/29
