RE: Engineering 1201-004
The concern I have with my work ethic is how to balance my academic work and my
studying with my free time. As a college student I know there is going to be a lot
more work thrown at us than in high school and I know I am going to need help
balancing that workload with my free time. In high school, I did little studying and
little work and I know I am not prepared for the intense workload college is going to
bring. I know as a college student it is very important to have free time to relax and
socialize. I am concerned that I will not be able to balance this workload and free
time effectively.
I know that I am not one hundred percent effective at managing my workload and
pace of study; however, I am using several methods to make sure that I do. One
method I am using is a day planner. Every night I write down what I need to do
tomorrow and what time of the day I am free to do it. This method helps me very
much because the hours of the day I do have free are not spent trying to figure out
what work I need done that day.
Working in a team, I learn faster and I am more productive with my time than when
I work alone. When I am working with a team, I do not have the same distractions as
when I am alone. When I am alone I tend to end up on my phone or thinking of
doing something else. When I am with a team, I do not want to interrupt everyone
that is helping and contributing to the work so I tend to stay on topic easier. This
was shown in high school my senior year. I was in a big study group for AP physics
and I could see myself doing better in the class and on the test. I knew this because
early in the year, I would study on my own and I was struggling in the class but
once I joined the study group, my grades improved drastically.
Another method is to contribute more to the discussions we have as a group. When
it comes to study groups sometimes I am too afraid to ask questions because I do
not want to seem dumb. I need to make sure that I understand the subject as best I
can. I could also do better by answering others questions and not being scared that
I am wrong.
When I entered the engineering program, I thought that writing was not going be to
a big deal. Once I got into Engineering 1201 that mindset changed. I am aware now
that writing is just as important if not more as the math that is going to be involved.
I am ready to improve my writing skills to the level that I will need to be a
successful engineer. Writing is not my strong attribute but realizing that I am going
to need it to be an engineer has changed my overall idea of writing to a more
positive mindset.
