BeginningActivities
A. Iwillbeginthetreatmentgroupbyintroducingmyselftothegroupmembers.
B. OnceIintroducemyself,Ipassoutcontractsthatstatestheconfidentiality.Iwill
discussthebasisofthecontract,andthegroupmemberswillsign.
C. Oncethecontractissignedandmutuallyagreedamongthegroupmembers,Iwill
discussthepurposeandthegoalsofthetreatments.
D. ThenIwillletthegroupmembersdoanicebreakerthatintroducesthemselvesto
eachother.Theicebreakerwillinvolvethetopicofselfesteem.Thegroup
memberswillintroducethemselveswiththeirnamesaswellasanadjectivethat
beginswiththeirfirstname.(Example:AwesomeApril)
E. Onceeveryonehasintroducethemselves,Iwilltellthememberstorememberthe
adjectivetheyusedinordertouseinanotherdiscussion.

Goals/LearningObjectivesfortheGroup

A. toprovideeachgroupmemberwithopportunitiestoparticipateingrowth
experiencesthatwillenhancehisorherselfesteemandprovideabasisofhealthy
groupinteraction
B. toeducategroupmembersabouttheindicatorsofselfesteem
C. togiveanappreciationtoeachgroupmembersassetseitherthroughcompliments
orselfrealization

MiddleActivites
A. CausesofLowandHighSelfEsteem
1. AftertheicebreakerIwillaskgroupsmemberstolistthecausesoflow
selfesteemandhowtoachievehighselfesteem.Thereisnominimumor
maximum.Thegroupcanlistasmanyastheycanthinkof.Oncethereare
enoughcauseswrittenontheboard,wewilldiscusshowthesecauses
comeaboutandthereasonbehindthem.
2. Asagroupdiscussion,thegroupmemberswillbeabletocomparewhich
sideiseasiertolistaswellasdiscusstheeffectofhighandlowself
esteemofotherswithineachstageoflife.
3. Thisactivitywillbenefitthegroupbyalwaysthinkingbeforetheyspeak
toothersnegatively.Asfuturesocialworkers,wepromotepositive
thinkingandactionsandalwaysoptimistforourclients.
B. ThreeofAKind
TREATMENTGROUP#1
1. Thesecondactivityinvolvesthedistributionof3differentplayingcards
foreachgroupmember.Onceeachmemberisgiven3cards,theactivity
canbegin.
2. Eachcardrepresentsadifferentnumberandadifferentmeaning.Forthe
firstcard,themembermustlistnegativecommentsorthoughtsthegroup
hashadintheirlife.Forthesecondcard,themembermustlistpositive
commentsaboutthemselves.Forthethirdcard,themembermustlistgood
traitsorcommentsaboutanothermemberofthegroupthatwasnot
alreadysaid.
3. Thisactivitywillletthegrouprealizetheirownselfesteem.Ifanyonein
thegroupisexperiencinglowselfesteem,thatgroupmemberwillshould
beabletoseethatthepositivefeaturesoutweighthenegativecommentsor
thoughts.
C. MyStrengthsandQualitiesWorksheet
1. Closetotheendofthegroup,Iwillpassoutaworksheettoeachgroup
member.
2. TheworksheetincludessubtitlessuchasThingsImgoodat,
ComplimentsIvereceived,ThingsIlikeaboutmyappearance,and
ChallengesIveovercome.
3. Thegroupmembersaretofilloutthisworksheetandkeepitwiththem.
Discussionofstatementswrittendownarecompletelyoptionalandisnot
required.
