Sport Pedagogy Lesson Plan Template (Elementary and Middle School)
Background Information
Teacher: Sheldon Simas

Date: November 18, 2015

School: Cleveland Elementary

Grade Level: 3rd Grade

Lesson Focus: The lesson focus for this week is still

primarily on soccer. Being that this is the last week
of Tiger Pride, we will introduce a scrimmage like
activity for the students where they can apply all of
the past soccer skills that we've gone over into the
activity.

# Of students: 20 Students

Equipment and Facilities: For this lesson its crucial

to utilize a large amount of space. The grass space is
good enough and/or black top space. The equipment
that will be needed for this lesson will be a set of
cones and multiple soccer balls.
24 cones
12-15 soccer balls

Safety Considerations: The safety considerations falls

under the consideration for space. Students will be
spaced out quite tremendously so that it will give
them enough space to perform the cues of the skill.
This will prevent from student colliding within each
others space and possibly get seriously injured.

Lesson Specifics
Behavioral Contingencies: When students are talking
I will simply raise my hand to receive the students
attentions. The students will only receive one
warning, if and only if any student shows any
disrespect to the teachers and fellow classmates,
without hesitation they will be asked to sit out.
Determining the consequence for such behavior will
depend on how crucial the situation is.

Previously Learned Skills:

Some previously learned skills that the students have
gone over are the passing cues. Students know that in
order to properly pass a soccer ball, they use the
inside of the foot. When dribbling the ball, the
students are to apply both sides of the foot while keep
their eyes forward. Students also know not to apply
the toes at all when passing and/or kicking the ball.

Teaching Strategy: The main strategies used are

Whole-Part-Whole and Active Learning.
(III)

Student
Objectives:

Academic Language: Students will be introduced to

the understanding of the phrase, cues of the skill.
From there the students will be able to perform
different sets of skills just based of the COTS. The
main goal is for the students to identify all the
different components that go into a skill. (I, II, IV)

Psychomotor (P): Students will continue to work on their passing skills for the first part
of the lesson. The second part of the lesson will involve the students to play in a
scrimmage like environment. (Apply the defense and Offense)
Cognitive (C): Before we begin the activity the students will go through a quick check for
understanding. After the cues of the skill have been provided and demonstrated to the
students, they will be asked to repeat what the cues of the skill were.
H-R Fitness (H): Before we begin the lesson the students will participate in a game called
sharks and minos.

CALIFORNIA PHYSICAL EDUCATION MODEL CONTENT STANDARDS:

I. Demonstrate the motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
II.Demonstrate knowledge of movement concepts, principles and strategies that apply to the learning and
performance of physical activities.
III.Assess and maintain a level of physical fitness to improve health and performance.
IV.Demonstrate and utilize knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts, principles and strategies
that apply to the learning and performance of physical activity.

NASPE PHYSICAL EDUCATION CONTENT STANDARDS a physically literate person:

1. Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical
activities.
2. Applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance.
3. Demonstrates the knowledge skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and
fitness.

Describe the pre-class arrangement

Teacher: The teacher will be waiting for the students where their activities will take place.
Students: The students will gather around the teacher where he/she is standing. They are given the
option to either sit or stand, as long as their attention is on the teacher.
Equipment: The cones marking the boundary for sharks and minos will be placed along with the four
sets of six cones for the actually lesson activity.

Instant Activity: The instant activity for
minutes this lesson will start off with Sharks and
Minos. Students will be given the
objective to run to the other side of the
line without getting tagged by a Shark.
There will be two students who will be
selected at the beginning of the game to
play as the sharks. They will continue the
game until all Minos are tagged. As a
minos is tagged, they become a shark.

students to move around and
have fun doing it by utilizing
certain games to their liking.

Transition:
minutes After the instant activity the students will
be given a short water break before the
beginning of the lesson content. They
will meet back where the teacher is for
further instruction.

3-5
Set Induction:
minutes Before the actual activity the students will
learn how to successfully dribble a soccer
ball. Using the basic teacherdemonstration the teacher will list off the
step-by-step COTS fro dribbling to the
students. As the teacher explains the
COTS he/she will then do a short CTFU
with the students. Randomly calling on a
students, the students that happens to be
called will be asked to say one of cues.
Then the teacher will conclude the
instruction by providing the students with
the lesson activity and what the objectives
are.
Purpose:
Explain to the students the reasoning as to
why we learn step by step is all because
they will be assessed towards the end of
the content.

Start/Stop Signals:
The main technique
used will be the
raising of the hand.
The teacher will
simply raise their
hand saying raise
your hand if you can
hear me. Basically
repeat that until all
student cooperate. If
all else fails then the
teacher will have to
raise their voice to
promote authority
over the students.
Grouping Strategies:
The teacher will hand
pick who the partners
will be. If students
complain they will be
sent out. The teacher
will provide the
warning before
assigning partners
also.

Transition :
The teacher will simply number the
students off 1-4. The numbers in which
the students are given signify where they
are stationed for the activity.

of two. Each student/group will go to a set of

two cones where the partners are facing each
other. The partners will basically review the
passing cues and apply them in the activity.
Each student will get couple sets of about a
dozen passes. Here the students will continue
to practice by utilizing their inner part of their
foot rather then the toes.

Teaching Cues for Task 1:

COTS (Passing a soccer ball)

- Non-kicking foot placed outside

of the ball
- Come in contact of the ball
- Inner part of the foot
- Follow through

Common Errors Task 1:

1. Proper body position for
performing the skill.
2. Use toes rather then inner
part of the foot
3. Kicking the ball too far ahead
4. Doesn't reach target

Demonstration Plan:
The teacher will most likely demonstrate
this skill multiple times in this lesson.
First the teacher will demonstrate the skill
while explaining the COTS. The as the
activity is in play the teacher will find
opportunities to pause the activity and
demonstrate the skill once again.
Questions to Check Understanding
What part of the foot do you use for
passing?
Do you use the toes?
1-2
Transition:

minutes Students will be given a quick water break
between lessons. After their break they
will then be debriefed on the next activity.

the students. Basically there will two

lines of about 8-10 students in each. Each
line will be at a corner and there will only
be one goal. Two cones will be placed at
the end of the boundary to indicate what
the goal is. Basically the teacher will toss
the soccer ball in a random part of the
boundary. Once the ball is in the air, a
student from each line will race to the ball
and either play defense or offense against
their opponent. This is essentially a game
of 1 v. 1 but then it eventually transitions
into a game like situation of 2 v. 2. The
objective for the students is to reach the
ball in time to provide themselves the
chance to score a point for their team.
Demonstration Plan:
The teacher will most likely demonstrate
this skill multiple times in this lesson.
First the teacher will demonstrate the skill
while explaining the COTS. The as the
activity is in play the teacher will find
opportunities to pause the activity and
demonstrate the skill once again.
Questions to Check Understanding
If there are any students who are not
focussed while the teacher is providing
them with instruction, then the teacher
will simply call on that specific student to
ask them to simply repeat what the
instructions were. If he or she fail to
answer the question it only shows that
they were paying attention.
