Teaching Models: Student-Centered Learning
Objectives: Students will be able to identify the concept of businesses and their purpose in the
community through a detailed Prezi and by creating their own "store" by making/bringing goods
to sell to the class.
Materials and Technology Resources: Prezi. Projector. Take-Home flyer. Class money for the
students to "buy" goods from their peers. Class and home materials to create what products they
wish to make to "sell". "Businesses in my Community" worksheet.
Instructional Procedures:
a. Motivation/Engagement:
1. Students will be asked to define what they think "business" means.
2. Students will be asked to give examples of a business.
b. Developmental Activities or Learning Experiences:
1. Students will be instructed on the importance of businesses via a Prezi.
2. Students will be informed on the components of a business (i.e. the "business
man" and the "customer" and the concept of "buying").
3. Students will be informed on the concept of "cost" in a business (i.e. choosing
prices for your product).
4. Students will be questioned on why we need businesses in our community.
5. Students will be informed on multiple examples of business in the community.

6. Students will be given the "Businesses in my Community" worksheet to


review.
c. Closure:
1. Students will be informed they will become their own business owner.
2. Students will be informed they will bring in or make things they want to sell
to class from their "business" to "sell" to their "customer" peers.
d. Extension:
1. Students will be sent home a flyer to their family discussing this project and to
assist their child in coming up with goods to "sell" in class using class money.
2. Students will bring in their goods (i.e. bookmarks, erasers, treats, bows, and so
on) to sell to their peers the following week.
Accommodations, Modifications and Differentiations for Diverse Learners:
1. Students will be given visual representations and examples of businesses from
their home community (if EL student).
2. Students will be given information in home language via a hand-out with
simple key words such as terms translated accompanied with English
vocabulary.
Assessment and Evaluation of Learning:
a. Formative: "Businesses in my Community" worksheet.
b. Summative: Business Owner project.
Homework Assignment:
1. Students are required to take home a flyer to their parents and brain storm
ideas on what to sell for their individual "business".
