Name: Erdem Denizli

Date: 9/20/2015

Topic Selected:
Teachers need to be trained and go through professional development in order to
successfully implement technology into education.
1. LITERATURE REVIEW:
What does the literature/research say about this issue/topic? By using NAU
Library or Online Search engines, conduct a literature review.

You need to include 5 different sources (book, journal article, web article
etc.) in your review. Try to use current sources as much as possible.

You need to summarize and synthesize your sources by discussing a

common theme or issue.

You don't need to critique your sources

You don't need to evaluate your sources (if the sources are trustworthy,
weather the author has a bias or not)

You need to provide background information such as history and

definitions

Brief Literature Review:

Technology integration to education has been studied for years to come. There had been
hundreds of researches and studies about this topic and the effects on the students,
increasing the effectiveness of the technology usage had also been other important studies
for education. However, integrating technology into education brought up some other
problems and disclosed the teachers inadequacy of technology beneficiary. Therefore,
providing professional developments to teachers in order to successfully implement
technology into education has been a crucial part of integrating technology into education
(Liu, Tsai & Huang, 2015).
As Lawless and Pellegrino studied, professional development is a vital factor where it
affects educators implementation of technology to their instruction environment
(Lawless & Pellegrino, 2007).
Similarly, Chang also stated that, staff development is one of the key features to enhance
educators technological literacy, so that these educators can easily implement technology
to their classroom instruction (Chang, 2012).
Wepner et al. had shown that educators who are willing to attend professional
development improve their understanding of information and communication technology
implication (Wepner, Tao & Ziomek, 2006).
By studying design, implementation and evaluation of effective integration of educational
technology(ET4ET), which is for engineering college instructors, Murthy and her friends
found out that the instructors showed high learning perceptions after the professional
development and could use the knowledge and skills of ET4ET in their own classes

(Murthy, Iyer & Warriem, 2015).

In conclusion, obtaining technological tools and implementing these to education can be
easier in some districts subject to their resources. However, the usage of these
technological tools should take place and this can happen if only teachers are instructed
about the technological tools and informed about their benefits. Therefore, providing
professional developments is as prominent as integration of technology into education.
2. REFLECTION:

What is your personal opinion on this issue? Do you agree with the
research? If you agree or disagree, please explain why?
Provide examples/experiences regarding this issue from school
perspective or If you are not working in a school, from your profession. Be
specific with your examples. You can mention software/hardware names,
specific methods that you plan to use, etc.
How would you implement this research in your career? (At least 1
paragraph)

Reflection:

I totally agree with the idea of the need of teachers to be trained and go through
professional development in order to successfully implement technology into education.
Because, there are so many technological tools being provided to schools and the teachers
generally get lost among these tools, and they start giving up immediately, or use just for
very little purposes. Technology is vital and it should be implemented into education, but
staff support should be provided as well as professional developments.
Just 4 years ago, the school where I had been working purchased 2 smartboards
(Promethean-ActivInspire). There was no one who knew how to use them and they had
been used as projector screens for a while. Then I worked on the software a bit and
figured out that it was no different than Paint of Windows. Our principal asked me to give
training to teachers and show them the basics. Right after the training, there were some
many teachers requesting to use the smartboard that the principal had to order 6 more!
Therefore, I strongly agree with the idea of the necessity of professional development to
implement technology into education.
If I was an administrator, I would definitely implement this research to my career. I
would provide professional developments for every single technological tool in my
campus or district from the professionals, let teachers know their benefits and provide
individual help if requested. But there is a common mistake that has been continuously
made. In my opinion, all the basics of each tool should not be given at once. Trainings
should be provided for different levels such as easy learners and slow learners. All the
features of a basic tool are tried to be taught at once and some teachers get lost
immediately. Basic features should be taught at first and time should be given for the
teachers to utilize them. Once they understand their benefits, they will start asking for
more by themselves.
