Data and Graphs Project (Grade 5 Advanced Math)

Project Overview: In this project, you will create a survey and collect data from several people. Once your data has been
collected, you will chose one questions data to make into a frequency table and then draw a graph. This project will count as a class
assignment grade for Topic 19.

1. Survey:
Day 1
*Pick a category or topic for your questions.
(Animals, travel, food, sports, classes, etc.)

*You must have 5 complete questions typed into your iPad using the app Notability. Questions should be as short, simple, and
clear as possible so that they are easy for people to answer. Try tostart with your most interesting questions!

*You will be collecting two sets of data of your choice: boys and girls, teachers and students, 5 th graders and 6th graders, etc.
Make sure you leave enough space to record your tally marks for each set of data! (See below for an example.)

*Make a list of 3 to 5 choices for each question:

What type of food do you like to eat the most at lunch?
Fruit
Boys:

salad

pasta

brownie

Girls:

*You must include at least one question with data collected in intervals:
How many times a week to you buy lunch?
(0-1)

(2-3)

(4-5)

*Pre test your survey by trying it out on one or twopeople to see how well your survey works. Did they understand your
questions? Do you need to edit your list of choices for any questions? Do you need to reword any of your questions?

2. Data:
Day 1

*Use your finger to draw tally marks whenyou collect data in Notability. Tally marks are collected in sets of five:

*Tally marks should be clear and easy to count

*You can collect data during math class, break time, during recess in the math classroom, and from home. Make sure you are the
one recording the tally marks on your survey.

*You must survey at least 16 people (8 boys and 8 girls for each question for example).

*If you start surveying someone, they must complete the entire survey.

What type of food do you like to eat the most at lunch?

Fruit

Boys:

Girls:

salad

pasta

brownie

3. Frequency Table:
Day 2
*First choose one question from your survey that you would like to use for the rest of the project.
*Ms. Holmes will give you paper to draw your frequency table.
Frequency Table:
*Create a frequency table that includes the questions choices or intervals, both sets of data, and frequency:
Preferred Place to Travel
Hot Beach
Snowy Mountains
Great Shopping

6th Grade

*If you are doing a Histogram, you only graph one set of data, not both. (You chose to either graph the 5 th graders or
the 6th graders, not both. You cannot have a double Histogram.)
*Make sure you label each column in your frequency table and use a ruler to draw any lines. The table should be as neat and clear
as possible.

4. Graph:
Day 2/3
*From the options below, choose what type of graph you should make based on the type of data you collected:
Double Bar Graph good for comparing data
(How many 5th and 8th graders buy their lunch and how many bring their lunch)
Histogram- this is a bar graph where the bars are connected and the data has been collected in intervals
(Comparing how many days a week students buy school lunch)
*Your hand drawn graph must include:
- A title that clearly reflects what data is being graphed
- 2 labelled axes
- A consistent scale starting with zero on each axis (are you counting by 2, 3, 4, 5?)
- Data graphed correctly according to your frequency chart
- Must be drawn using a ruler
- If you are doing a double bar graph, you must include a key for your two sets of data
(5th graders = blue and 6th graders = red)

*When you have completed your Frequency Table and your Graph, take pictures of them with your iPad. Paste these
photos into Notability below your survey.

4. Sentences: (Day 2/3)

*In two sentences, explain what you can deduce (conclude) from your graph. (What were students favourite lunches? Do most
students have dogs as pets?) Type these sentences into Notability below the photo of your graph. You must write these as full
and complete sentences that truly reflect what the data on the graph shows.

5. Cover Page: (Day 2/3)

*Your cover page needs to include a title, your name, and math class. The title should clearly reflect the data you have collected.
Do this last after you have completed your graph. You may add a visual to your cover page, but this is not necessary.
*You can type up your title page in Notability, or you can take a picture of your hand drawn title page and attach it to Notability.

When your project is complete, you will need to follow the steps given by Ms. Holmes to submit your
project from Notability.

Mathematics Data Project Rubric for Grade 5 Advanced Math

Survey:

10pts
All 5 questions are stated clearly, are all on the same topic, and are
easy to answer. The topic of the survey is clear from the questions
being asked. Most questions have more than 3 answer choices and
one question has data collected in intervals. Sufficient space has
been left for data collection for both sets of data at the end of
each question.

Frequency
Table:

(From one chosen

question from your
survey)

Sentences:

Cover Page:

5pts

All data is collected in tally marks correctly (sets of 5). At least 16

people were surveyed, 8 from each set of data. All 16 people
completed the entire survey. Tally marks are clear and easy to count.

3pts

The frequency table includes labelled columns containing the

question choices or intervals, both sets of data (unless it is a
histogram), and frequency of the data. Table must have been drawn
with a ruler so that it is neat and clear. The table contains the same
data that was collected on your survey.

8pts

Graph includes a clear title reflecting what data is being graphed, 2

labelled axes, a consistent scale on the axis, a key if it is a double
bar or line graph, and correctly reflects the data you collected from
your survey. Bars are connected with no space if the graph is a
histogram. The graph is drawn neatly using a ruler.

3pts

There are two complete sentences that clearly describe what you
can deduce (conclude) from the data on your graph. The sentences
accurately reflect the data in the graph.

1pts

Cover page includes your name, math class, and a title reflecting
what data you collected. Cover page is neat and clear.

7pts

5pts

Most of the 5 questions are stated clearly but some

questions can be difficult to answer. Most questions
have at least 3 answer choices but some questions have
less. There are no questions where data was collected
in intervals. Not enough space has been left for data
collection on every question.

Most of the questions are not stated clearly

and are difficult to answer. The topic is not
clear after reading the questions. Most
questions have fewer than 3 answer choices.
No data was collected in intervals. Space was
not left for data collection on most questions.

3pts

All data is collected in tally marks but not in sets of 5.

At least 14 people were surveyed, 7 from each set of
data. Some tally marks are unclear or difficult to
count. Some people did not complete the entire survey.

2pts

The frequency table includes columns without labels

that contain the question choices, both sets of data
(unless it is a histogram), and frequency of the data.
The table is clear but was not drawn neatly using a
ruler. The table contains the same data that was
collected on your survey.

6pts

Graph is missing two of the following:

Clear title reflecting the data collected, 2 labelled
axes, a consistent scale on the axis, a key, correctly
reflects the data collected from your survey, graph is
drawn neatly using a ruler.

2pts

Only one complete sentence has been written

describing what you were able to deduce (conclude)
from the data on your graph or sentences do not
accurately reflect data in the graph.

0.5pt

One of the following is missing: your name, math class,

or the title. Title does not reflect what data you
collected. Cover page is neat and clear.

1pt

Data was not collected in tally marks, or less

than 10 people were surveyed. Tally marks are
not clear and are difficult to count. Several
people did not complete the entire survey.

1pt

The frequency table is missing columns

containing the question choices, both sets of
data (unless it is a histogram), or frequency of
the data. The table is unclear and was not
drawn neatly using a ruler. The table contains
different data that was collected on your
survey.

4pts

Graph is missing three or more of the following:

Clear title reflecting the data collected, 2
labelled axes, a consistent scale on the axis, a
key, correctly reflects the data collected from
your survey, graph is drawn neatly using a ruler.

1pt

The sentence is not clear or does not correctly

reflect what you can deduce (conclude) from
the data in your graph.

0pts

No cover page was included.
