Directions: A requirement to successfully complete Education 1100 is the completion of a minimum of 15 hours spent observing in a public

school K-12 classroom. While observing you are to look for the following indicators, provide examples, and reflect on your observations for
each indicator. You may or may not see all indicators listed below due to the limited amount of time you spend in your cooperating teachers
classroom. You are however required to learn more about each indicator. Therefore you must have a conversation with your cooperating
teacher to understand the indicators not observed.

Classroom Setting
Indicators
Classroom Atmosphere:
Teacher- student and studentstudent interactions.

Examples
-

Classroom procedures:
Groups, materials, supplies,
transitions, and, routines.

Many helper teachers in and out of the

classroom
Teacher is very good at addressing every
student when they have a commit about
something, sometimes things get pushed
back because she allows every student to
talk
When teacher puts students in groups, she
makes sure that children dont make
commentary to hurt other students feelings
Students are very well at working together
and in groups. They enjoy sharing their
own thought/commits/experiences
Students help each other out and answer
one another questions
Students are allowed to go to bathroom (in
classroom), get own tissues, fill up water
with classroom sink, get new sharpen
pencil *without asking
Children desks are set up into groups of 5
facing each other, with a table captain
Students have own material (textbooks,
notebooks and folders, and own supplies)
located within their desk
Transitions: The teacher says something
and the students must say the correlating
word (Teacher: all set; Children: you
bet) Then the teacher will give dictions

Reflection
I thought that the teacher did a very good job at attending to
the students commits. She always was very excited to hear
what ever student had to hear. Sometimes the students
would talk for too long and the teacher would have to cut
them off though; but then that student would talk to her
during alone time. I would love to have my own classroom
with as much interaction as this one.

I liked how independent the students were allowed to be

with getting things they needed to help them through the
day. As long as they werent being loud and distracting, then
the teacher would allow them to move around the
classroom. I loved the idea of students being placed into
groups as their seating, but I thought that it would have
been a good idea to move the childrens seats every month,
so they get a new ideas from different friends. I thought that
the transitions were very well in order and the children
followed them! I picked it up for work, and the children
love copying what I am doing. The routine went very
smoothly, and the children even know what to do if the sub
did not know what to do.

quickly and quietly
The routine is the same every Friday
(Spelling, Wordily Wise, Reading Fluency,

Classroom behavior:
Expectations/rules,
monitoring, and response.

The children must remain silent during

translation
- When working with groups or partners the
teacher will put up a noise monitor on the
overhead with her IPad
- There is a noise chart on how load the
students should be while working
(Children cant make a lot of noise because the
walls are not completely built up to the top and
there is no door)
- Children must meet goal targets for the
week by Friday and when talking about
those targets must always start with I Can
- Children must be respectful to everything
around them and follow direction the first
time they were given
- Children are expected to do their
homework, or they must sit in silent room
during second recess
- Children that need to leave the class for
extra help must know what time they leave
and be reasonable for being on time and
being quit in the halls alone
- Be responsible for their own IPads

I understand that the classroom was not completely closed

off from the hallway, and that it would be very easy for the
students to become loud, but I didnt like how the children
were expected not to talk while going through translation. I
believe that it makes for a very long day when the child
cant get little things off their mind to their friends; even if
its for a short amount of time. I think that the children
worked very well with knowing and meeting their goals
each week, and I like the idea. I thought that when the
children are going over the goals at the end of the week and
they had to state I can, it was a great way to promote selfesteem to the child. I hated seeing children sit in the silence
room during their second recess. I am a strong believe that
children need something to let out their energy, and sitting
for ten minutes because they did not finish their homework
was not a good enough reason for me. Instead of staying for
their second recess I think that there is defiantly a better
way to handle it. I thought that the teacher should give a
reminder to the student that they are supposed to leave the
room for their extra help. I agree that each child is
responsible for their own IPad. I dont agree that each child
has their own IPad, but it shouldnt fall on the teacher to
keep track of 30 different IPads.

Classroom layout:
Arrangement of furniture,
resources for student use, and
technology integration.

The classroom layout was very crowded. I felt that there

was not a lot of space to walk because everything was so
jam packed in. I think that the teacher only needed one desk
and the one that was in the front of the class was

marked with important dates

unnecessary. I did like all the resource posters and the

pencil bucket idea. This way children can get the help they
need without interrupting the teacher. I also felt like the
students top of the desk were over crowded with them
having their IPads on top. Some students would have their
IPads, headphones, and water bottles sitting up on their
desk, then there goes their whole desk space. I also would
have loved to see more of the students work up on the walls
or hanging up.

Reflection
I thought that it was a cool idea to have the
word of the day up on the board. The teacher
would use it in a sentence randomly and you
can tell that some students picked up on it. It
was awesome when the students would look up
the meaning of the word because they just
wanted to know and it wasnt required.
The students really like the idea of the way the
teacher did math. I thought that it was kind of a
flawed system though, because the teacher
would say that one board was right but the
student next to them had it wrong. Then the
student would cheat and write down the right
answer without doing their own work.
However, I did like how the teacher would go
over the question on the board showing step by
step.
I think this is a very traditional way to run a
classroom. I would have loved to see the
students get more involved. I think it is really
good idea to have the students work in a group
and then give presentation on what they

normally picks a few students to answer

learned. I believe that in elementary school,

they need to get students better prepared for
middle and high school because when these
students get to those grade levels, they dont
know to give a presentation. Elementary
teachers should be showing students many
different ways to provide information to the
rest of the class. The students also need to feel
more comfortable getting up in front of their
friends to give presentations.

believer that students learn best by example

children go outside when they were learning
science or walk around the library and measure
things when they were learning about math.

IPads so they dont get distracted as easily.
I dont like that IPads are a primary source but
they are and theres nothing I am going to do
to change that. I like the use of the white

Reflection: Teacher ask the children what they just

Teacher will allow students to discuss in groups
Closure: Tells students they are running low on time
and will return to subject the following day
Wait time: When they are switching subjects the
teacher will put the tornado tubes out and the students
must be ready to go when all the water has crossed
over
There is a helper that comes into the classroom and
takes aside the children that are struggling with math
and works with closer attention
There is a student with a one on one aid working in
the classroom at all times with him and he is allowed
to make chances to fit his own needs

I loved the way the teacher got the students

attention. The students much rather participle
in something fun, than be yelled at when they
are being too noisy. I also liked the way that
the teacher would start a new subject with a
question because this would get the students
minds wondering about what they are going to
be learning next. This was a really good way to
grab the students attentions. I thought that the
tornado tubes were an extremely clever idea!
The students would want to clean up quicker
so they can watch the rest of the tubes! I loved
watching the childrens reactions.

Improvisation: Making
adjustments, flexibility based
on the student needs

Student interests, culture, and

other diversity incorporated

The students loved learning social studies (learning

the different cultures and way of living)
Students made friends with everyone (divers
classroom)
There were many different cultures and background
children in the classroom. Many students like sharing
their traditions to me during Halloween.
They loved animals and learning about them (they had
to do a project all about an animal they choose)

I thought that instead of the helper teacher

coming into the classroom, the students should
have gone with her to another classroom. I
think that the helper teacher was distracting to
the rest of the class because they were being
loud. I felt like the students that did need the
extra attention defiantly got it though, and I
loved to see that within the classroom!
I wouldnt be able to stand being in a
classroom that had no diversity. Each child has
their own viewpoints and ways of doing things
that its extremely interesting to me to learn! I
love living in a day of age that everyone can
get along with anyone no matter what history
they have. I know that when I go into work,
the children teach me more than I teach them.

with different solutions about bullies and
how to deal with them

Reflection
I thought that it was awesome listening
to the students read their papers out
loud to the class! The students really
grasped the idea of English terms
throughout their papers. There was also
some new vocabulary words that
students used properly throughout their
papers.
I think that the teachers within this
district do a really good job at getting
the students prepared for the next grade
level. I love the idea of children learning
through games, it makes it fun for them
and fun for the teacher as well. I also like
the idea of the students be able to have
extra help when they need it. I know that
when I was younger I always had to go
into extra help, but my teachers always
made it a fun learning experience for
me. I like the fact that if a child is
struggling with a project, then the
teacher will always allow more time.

I thought this was an excellent thing to

talk about with the students because it
showed them that things like this really
do happen. Some of the students said

teaching each other different ways to
interpret the information. I love this idea!
I also like hearing the social studies

I am not a good test taker, therefore I
dont like to take or give out test. I think
that students should be able to retake
their test at least once if they get a
grade under a C, so that they learn the

I think that these are really good skills to have

them for what they are going to encounter later
in school.
I think that my teacher did a lot of good ways
of monitoring student learning. I love the idea
of group conversances. I also think that the
self-reflections were really important in
making a difference in the way that the teacher

much. For example the students didnt have to
have the right answer on their homework, I
think it would be better for the teacher to grade
them, hand them back, and allow
improvement.
