Introduction
Have students come into the classroom, and grab their silent
reading book if needed. Students will have 15 minutes of silent
reading and they will be expected to read on their own, and
record how much they have read in their reading log.
We will do a review of what they remember from previous
lessons, as a group discussion. Students will be asked to remind
me of the 5Ws and the different parts of the newspaper.
Take this chance to remind students that we have our teacher
vs students, and remind them that seating plans are not
permanent and can be changed.
Have students put their silent reading books away, and get
their fact vs opinion worksheets out.

fact is, and what an opinion is, and what do we want to use
when writing an article. Continue going through the fact vs
opinion worksheet, and have students read the answers aloud,
discussing why each one would be fact or opinion.

5 mins

Do a quick review of the 5 Ws and H. Have students tell you

where they would usually find this in a newspaper article. Then
do a review of the parts of a newspaper article, and what each
part might look like, and what each part should be structured
like.

Activity/Activities

By sharing our answers and discussing the answers, students

will be able to check their answers, and understand the
reasoning behind each one. Students will mark their own
papers, and will keep them in their binders. This will allow for
students to correct their own answers, and work towards a
better understanding of fact vs opinion.
Newspaper Scavenger Hunt
Hand out sections of newspaper and have students work on
their own. Have the students find an article, read the article,
and find the different parts of the newspaper article. Students
will be required to write them down in their language arts
notebooks.
- Students are required to cut out the newspaper article,
and glue it into their language arts notebooks.
- Students will be asked to write it out, and not to just
highlight like we had done previously.

Students will hand in their language arts books for me to look

over this assignment, and give feedback. There will be no mark
attached to this.
Students will be able to converse with the others at their table
to gain assistance If needed, as well as having me roam
throughout the classroom and assist.
Closure
Bring the class back as a group, and have them discuss how
easy it was to find the necessary information, and what they
found challenging
Next Lesson, continue newspaper scavenger hunt if needed,
and then continue on to writing a newspaper article with a
prompt.
