SmartBoard with an accurate clipart map of the world to be doodled on.


- YouTube videos of music and dance
- Drums/iPad drum replicas

(00:00) Welcome to class


o Have cultural music on as class comes in (MN Native Americans)

Music from different cultures can sound really different from what were used
to
o That first piece is from the ____ tribe, that lived here in Minnesota
many years ago
What sounded different from music were used to?
What was the same?
Can you find Minnesota on a map?
In many cultures, music and dance went together! Who can demonstrate a
dance that goes with music (Not Gangnam Style.)
o Today, were going to learn about the music of different groups of
people, but also about the dances that went with them.

Demonstrate (00:15)

Lets start with the song we were listening to. Theres a dance that goes with
that (Being very careful not to offend..). Lets watch a YouTube video of
how it might be performed.
o Lets try it out!

For our next piece, well be dancing to music from India, called a Raga. Can
someone circle India on the SmartBoard map?
o Heres a video of a traditional dance to a Raga. Lets try!
o What makes this music different from what were used to? What
makes it the same?
(00:25) Another culture with a lot of good music is the southern region of
Africa. Can you find the country of Kenya on the SmartBoard? In this culture
not only did people dance, but they played drums too! Lets try keeping a
beat on our drums while I play this YouTube video.

(00:30) Lets put the drums away now.

(00:31) Some of the coolest music can come from the warmest places
(Bdum, Chhhh!) This is a recording of a group called Baladino, and their
music which comes from the Middle East. Does anyone know where the
Middle East is? (Help them find the general area).

(00:32) Sometimes dance was improvised especially in this music.
