Practicum Reflection-Guided Reading Lesson
Name of Book_________Pairs______________________________Level_______C________________
1. What was the area of focus today during the lesson? What activities related
to the area of focus were included in the lesson today?
The focus of todays lesson was visualization which aids in comprehension. We did
an activity where I had the students close their eyes and I read page 3 which
described a pair of socks. I had them open their eyes and draw a picture of a pair of
socks that they visualized. One student drew polka dots on them, one drew a Nike
sign and the last drew plain socks. I could tell from the pictures the students were
visualizing and relating the text to their prior knowledge.
2. What went well with the instruction? What did students learn?
The closing the eyes activity went well with the instruction. I also had students
explain what pairs were at the beginning because they were unsure. After we
decided what pairs were I had the students come up with some things that come
in pairs. Shoes, bicycle wheels, moms and dads, twins were among the things
students named. Students learned that pair mean things that go together or come
in twos.

3. Explain a growth moment for yourself where you realized, learned, or

confirmed something from today dealing with student achievement in the
area of reading. (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary,
comprehension, before/during/after reading
Today I realized how much visualization during reading helps children with their
comprehension. It also helps build their vocabulary because they get a picture in
their mind about the words they are learning. Seeing the socks the students drew
also confirmed how background knowledge and previous experiences can change
how students comprehend things. Some students visualize polka dot socks and
some visualize plain socks, this might make the story more interesting for one
reader than another.

4. Describe a moment when a student grasped an idea/concept-that got it!

kind of moment. How was the teacher able to facilitate this experience?
Explain the situation.
When we first started describing visualization one of the students was having a hard
time understanding it. After talking and describing its like drawing a picture in your
mind he said, Oh! So its like a video game screen? Like whatever youre reading
shows up on a video game screen in your brain. And for him, that was exactly what
visualization meant.
