Elementary Physical Education Class Observation Report
Name of school district, name of school, grade level, name of teacher, whether teacher is
classroom teacher or PE specialist, date & time you observed, etc. Paramount School District.
Abraham Lincoln Elementary. Mr. Berthone, fifth grade classroom teacher. I observed on
11/04/14. I observed him from 10:15 to 10:45.
The teacher was wearing comfortable pants, polo shirt, tennis shoes, and he had his bottle
of water. There were 38 students in his group. 18 of them were boys, and 20 girls. The majority
of the students had tennis shoes, but one girl; most of the boys were wearing shorts, and the girls
were wearing pants, and some wore shorts.
They stretched and warm up inside the classroom; the teacher told students to start
marching down around the perimeter. Since the tables are arranged in the middle to have this
kind of activities they were able to do at least three and a half minutes of walking, marching, and
running in their own space to line up and warm up at the same time. Once they got out in the
playground he directed them to do a few more stretches and then to get the equipment. He used a
partner with one friend to form groups. He had 2 groups lined up facing each other; he gave one
of the groups balls; students started passing the balls to the partner in front of each one of them.
This activity lasted about five to seven minutes. He moved then to walk around the perimeter of
the field for about five minutes asking them to move at different paces, and different directions
or hopping and, or jumping or walking every 30-45 seconds; he allowed each student to decide
his/her own pace. The teacher asked them to continue moving to form a circle by following the
person in front of them; the students were given a chance to choose from different stretches.
Then the teacher told them to stand in one foot like a flamingo, then to try to jump in the same
foot, and then to do the same with the other foot. The teacher was giving the students instructions
to do jumping jacks, do circles with arms, to both sides, to move their head around both ways, to
cool off. Then he gathered the whole group by saying mental math to which everyone raised their
hands. As they were marching back to the room he was asking math facts such as time tables,
and additions, or subtractions. It was so much fun I wanted to be a kid again.
The classroom was well organized when he told students to get ready for Physical
Activities, everyone started putting away their pencils, colors, and books, but before they started
he told them to first start marching from the tables and to the book shelves; he also told them to
grab their water bottle, and some of the balls he had inside of the room. The students were well
organized and the teacher gave a little reminder about the rules to follow; the teacher managed to
give positive reinforcement as well as time out to one of the students for not following rules.
Students were really involved and cooperate in the flow of each activity. Since the
teacher had enough equipment for at least four students, they only waited about 20 seconds for
their turn when in line. The instructions were given step by step before going out of the

classroom. No students were left out, and he joined in when he had the opportunity to show them
the adjusted activity. The teacher had a lot of energy that was transmitted to his students.
My favorite part I will say was how all of his students already know where to go, and
how they followed the teachers command. I liked the whole observation.
I learned that even though all students are different if the teacher has energy and
enthusiasm the students will enjoy Physical Activities.
